If you have one in pretty good condition on or near the U.S. west coast that is not too beat up and will pass CA smog, please let me know. Would prefer colors other than black. It doesn't have to be perfect, but then again, I'm not looking for a total project car either. I'd also welcome comments from owners of such cars as to the durability of the auto trans in these models - or lack thereof. Manuel, Steve Albrecht, who posts here often, likes the Zaino Brothers clay bars, and his car looks real purdy. I'm not sure where to get it, but I'd start by trying carcareonline.com. I've hung out in a few different types of bars, but I've never been in a clay bar. <rimshot> Scott Miller GGC BMW CCA >Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 15:57:42 -0700 (PDT) >From: Mr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: [uuc] Clay Bar?? > >Greetings all! > >I just wanted to get some feed back on a good clay bar >kit. Also check out www.bmwtips.com, it has some useful information on many things on the E39. You can drive your car on the Autobahn all you want, but yes, at least a few years ago, Sixt really did have a repo man at the Nueburgring. I think they got tired of having their cars go out of service to replace worn tires, dented sheet metal, or worse. Some customers have tried removing the stickers from their cars to evade detection but that really doesn't help as Sixt can recognize one of their the license plates. Whether a car goes on the flatbed seems to depend on customer's behavoir and the office that rented it. Being courteous and renting from an office that doesn't see many of their cars at the 'ring seems to help. > Part of the Ring is a public road, right? How can > they prevent me from driving it? Is the fun part not > the public part? I need to do some research on that - > anyone know the good sources of information? The traffic laws treat the Nuerburgring as a public road, however - and I am no lawyer - I believe this is really a civil matter. Sixt is allowed to set reasonable bounds on how their property is used to protect it from harm. Having a visitor drive a rental car on the Nueburgring greatly increases the chances it will be damaged. At least that has been my experience. Of the last four American 'ring tourists I have ridden with, two ended up totalling their cars and a third crashed his so badly it was undrivable. (Unfortunately, I was in it at the time.) The Nuerburgring is not going anywhere anytime soon. Remember, you can always go back! -John '96 318is On Thu, 12 Jun 2003, Neil N. wrote: > > > > Ummmmm, no... Are you serious? I have my '88 in the shop, and the guy says the driveshaft may be bad (bad u-joints tearing up the center bearing). He says he may have a used one that can swap on, but that the late '87/'88 e28 manual driveshafts are rare and he may have to have mine rebuilt. Question #1 - Is the driveshaft unique to that year range? Question #2 - Are the u-joints really rebuildable? I'm in Atlanta, and he says a company called Driveline Specialists (or something to that nature, they're in the Roundel) can rebuild them, for around $325 or so. I'm trying to weigh what I'm going to do w/ this $1000 car that I've already spent about $500 on (new center bearing that lasted 2 weeks, new sport wheel - - yeah, really needed that one! ;-), exhaust system replaced...) What do y'all think? I'm weighing in the option of just selling the car as-is, and getting an e-34 - do the later 5-series (or early e-36's) suffer similar driveline 'opportunities' similar to the e30's and e28's? My wife wants me to sell it and get a honda (snore...) - I'm hooked on the bimmer... Thanks! I vowed a long time ago that I would not set foot on the soil of the nation of Germany without an itinerary in hand that had the word "Nurburgring" on it. I've waited several years to see and drive it, and actually passed up a trip with friends who I knew would not indulge me. If they tow away my 3er, I'll take a cab to Avis and get whatever I can, but if it's a public day, I assure you, I'll be on it. :) "Going back" to the track at a later date will do nothing to reduce the chance of wreckage, as even now I have no intention to be stupid and bite it on a blind turn. I just want to drive the track, that's all - albeit briskly, where prudent. Neil - --- John Firestone <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > The Nuerburgring is not going > anywhere anytime > soon.
