Subject: [uuc] Dealer Allocation??

I went in to my friendly, local BMW dealer today
and said, more or less: "I'd like to buy a 330i
with Performance Package, please."

He said: "Well, they're sold out for 2003.
You can have a 2004, but you'll have to wait for
our allocation on that model. Availability is
probably sometime in October or later." Great.

Me: "What about European Delivery?"

Him: "Same deal. You can pick it up in Europe,
but it comes out of our allocation, so you'll
still have to wait for it to become available."

Two questions:

1) Can't a dealer special order a car outside
his allocation? I'm gonna want to pick my colors
and options anyway.

2) I though European Delivery was outside the scope
of dealer allocation. Am I wrong here?

Also, watch out for the sunroof. If not working properly they can be
expensive to repair. Look for fraud(sp?) cords (they break). Also, the '95s
had M5 style side pieces below the doors. Looks better than the pre '95
models (too me at least). I saw a local '95 525iTa for sale for $13K a while
ago.

As I recall, the early E46 got a lot of complaints about numb,
excessively light steering which was addressed in a later running
change with the retrofit made available at no charge to owners of
early cars. You might check on those details and find out if the car
you drove had the "update". I believe the change was in effect with
April 2001 production.

Brad:

Have you tried sketching and explaining the function
of the clutch? I always go through the mechanicals of
the car with my students and anyone who does not want
to listen and learn . . . yes, you guessed it . . .
they can find someone else!

What of the SO you ask? I tried and failed and have a
dent in the passenger door of the 88 iS to show for a
rare loss of temper. Then, I decided to send her to a
friend. He failed to teach her too. Eventually, she
and a girlfriend went to the test together and passed
it somehow. Next time I will not even try. Send the
SO to someone else, I say! I've seen some friends
pull this off very smoothly by stating up front that
SO teaching is just a bad idea and that just about
anyone else would be better.

I freaking TRIED that with Jennifer. Her brain just
refused to understand how to work a clutch or
anything. She got a little better, but she definitely
needs a lot more work.

Drop Dean Wingard an e-mail and see what he can do for you.

He sold me my 330i at a great deal, and just sold my boss a 540i for a
little over dealer cost.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

By the way, from what I have heard the Euro delivery uses up one of the
dealer's slots.

I don't know if there are special slots for the PP cars or not - but Dean will
know and shoot straight.

For both my boss and I he found us a car just like we wanted literally on the
boat en route to another dealer and had it diverted to his dealership
(Augusta, GA) in no time at all.

Even though we had been together for over 2 years and
she had heard me talk about engine this and
transmission that, most of this stuff is still Greek
to her. All I could do was give a brief rundown of
what doing certain things to the pedals would do.

She seemed to get more flustered than I did, even
though I had owned my 535i for less than a month when
I started her lesson!!!

She was able to get the car moving without pushing the
gas, so I guess all was not lost. The worst part for
her was stopping the car and making it do what she
wanted it to do (i.e. pressing the clutch when
pressing the brake instead of JUST pressing the
brake).

We should get paid for something like this, but I
guess that defeats the purpose of a FREE lesson! :-)

I some times call my 00 M Geezemobile (E39 M5) a 550is/6 (5L sport model
w/6spd). I didn't think there were any 99 US E39 M5's, since IIRC the first
ones came to North America in October of 99 as MY2000 cars.

Any info on cosmetics other than grille? What about
the color-coded plastic side-skirts that appeared on
the later E34 cars? Did they appear on the Tourings?

I'll add several Touring-specific issues to the list:

Yes, my 1995 Touring has the same side skirts as my 1991 M5. As did all
E34s I believe.

        Back in about 1980, I bought a '74 2002 instead of a '76
Rabbit and thought I would join the BMW Club of Canada. I heard they
had driving schools. I thought it would be good for my
then-girlfriend and me to go to Mosport. She could learn to shift and
I could go fast. Neither happened.
She didn't enjoy the experience. She told me the only time
she had driven a manual box was when she went skydiving in Vancouver
with her former boyfriend and he broke his ankle. She had to drive
him to the hospital in his Volvo.... She still is afraid of manuals,
and skydiving for that matter.
I ended up instructing, but not for her. We are still friends, though.
