Mike,

I recently used Dependable Auto Shippers (.com, I
think) to ship a 99 M3 across the country. With the
exception of the absolutely idiotic attendants at the
local pickup station (YMMV), the Co. was very
professional and helpful, and reasonably priced. It
was shipped enclosed, so there was obviously no damage
when the car arrived.

HTH,

Neil

I was cleaning the windscreen interior surface yesterday morning and
knocked the rear view mirror clean off the glass. On the upside, I
have this great panoramic view out of the front now. Perhaps that
helped me navigate the autocross course yesterday. On the downside, I
have flashbacks of driving a dump truck when I have to use only my
side mirrors to see behind me. On the upside, it's impossible for
anyone to intimidate you by tailgating when you have no mirror there.
Anyway, since the mirror is off, should I leave it off, get some
appropriate epoxy to re-fasten it, or get another different rear view
mirror entirely? Suggestions please!

As you have indicated an E30, assuming you have an E30, unless you have
a convertible, no amount of glue will suffice :-)

Convertibles work well with the glue kit from the auto parts store.

The rest work by inserting one side, prying with a thin screwdriver
against the extended plunger on the other side and rotating the second
end piece into place.

Subject: [uuc] 740iL

Gruppe,

I wanted to share my new car with you guys. Over the years, I have owned
four E36s and an E30 but my newest addition is this E38 740iL.

My wife and I are expecting our first child and I could not find it in me to
go get a mini-van or an SUV just for the space requirements. So, I went with
the ultimate cruiser, the 740iL.

This is a 2000 with 82k miles on it. The car had some front end shimmy from
worn and out-of-balance tires and I got a good deal because of it (cost me
$20k from the dealer). I put some new wheels and tires and the car runs as
smooth as silk.

Having only owned 3ers in the past and only 5 speeds at that, the big 7er
definitely feels like a land boat. I think that the shocks need replacement,
but I can definitely see that this car is not meant to be tossed around. But
it is great for highway cruising through (8 hours yesterday to the Putnam
Park race and back was a breeze).

I have some pictures up (http://www.nuthulapaty.com/740iL), the *before and
*after pictures reflecting the modifications I have made (body colored
skirts and bumpers and 18" M-Parallel wheels).

Subject: RE: [uuc] 87 325i swap to 325e

Wow Sam, this is interesting!

The eta engine has more displacement (more torque) but a lower redline
(somewhere around 4500 or 5000 RPM) The throttle body (and maybe the
airflow meter? are smaller. The "i" engine has lower displacement, but a
higher redline (6200/6500 RPM) and more HP. In each case, the ECU is tuned
to the engine characteristics.

If the engine is running a 325i ECU, you run the risk that the engine will
be over-revved, which will float the valves and possibly cause piston/valve
contact. This would not be ideal, to say the least.

There are ways to turn an eta engine into a 327i. The head still works,
but the "i" cam has more bearings. The head casting has the bosses for the
bearings, but the oil holes have to be drilled out. Then an "i" cam and
valve train can be installed. However, I believe a different piston/rod
set-up would be needed to make this upgrade optimal.

The thing you need to find out is if the ECU and injectors are for the eta
engine or for the "i" engine. The ECU is located above the glove box.
After you drop the glove box and remove the cover thingie, you'll see the
ECU. Get the Bosch and/or BMW part numbers and check them to see which ECU
is being used.

If the ECU is correct for the eta engine, then congratulate your son on
having the world's first E30 325ec ! Otherwise, advise him that he should
avoid revving the engine over 5000 RPM until the problem is resolved. You
may not be able to successfully resolve the surge problem until you rectify
any mismatch.

I was not aware that the 325e didn't have a flex disc. Hey, we live and
learn. But the purpose of the flex disc is to absorb some of the driveline
shock that can shorten the life of transmission components. Flex discs are
cheap and easy to replace, relative to transmissions.

Good luck,

Scott Miller

In the state of Maryland inspection law used to be two rear viewing
mirrors, so technically you could leave it off - if you are a MD resident.
Don't know about VA or DC.

With M side mirrors, the center rear view is almost a must - unless you
really don't want to know what's behind you.

Sorry, yes it's a ragtop. I like to examine the possibilities for
upgrades anytime something breaks. Any similar shaped models with
cool features that I need? auto-dim, built in GPS, ice dispenser,
etc?
