On Saturday my parents called to ask what I thought their 1992 Acura Legend was worth as a trade in and said they were going out to buy a new car. Since I knew their plans were to just visit the Acura and Lexus dealerships I kept the BMW sales pitch short. I looked up the Acura on edmunds.com and casually mentioned "if they offer you less than $3K I'll buy it". Well on Fathers Day my Dad handed me the signed pink slip and asked when I was going to take the Acura away. The good news is that I should be able to sell the car for about $6K, but there are a few things I want to fix before I put it on the market. If anyone knows of any Acura e-mail lists like this one let me know (via private e-mail). '85 535i 218,000 miles It's been running rough on warm starts for a little while - new plugs, rotor, cap, fuel filter, air filter, valve adjustment didn't change a thing. The last couple of days it's acted like it's starved for fuel for a few minutes of driving - it seems that it stays that way until I can get up enough speed that I can let off the gas and create some good vacuum in the system. My "feeling" is that the fuel pressure regulator is sticking or somehow failing. I've had fuel pump relay problems before and it doesn't act like that at all. Does this sound familiar to anyone - does the regulator seem like a likely candidate here? I'd suggest looking to get used calipers rather than buying new ones, since you can rebuild them to be good as new and they're likely to be _much_ cheaper than new or re-man stuff. Steve D'G is a good source for rotors & pads as is another loyal lister Jack Money at elephantmotorsports.com there are some pretty good E34 brake FAQ's out there : http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/brakes.htm http://bmwe34m5.com/articles/mbrake.pdf both links have calculations on the braking balance & force which various set-ups provide, which lets you see what you're getting in terms of an upgrade from your stock set-up. You need to disconnect the orange connectors behind the knee bolster. You could also install a non-airbagged car's panel that has no SRS light. Also, I got the auto so that my wife does not have to 1)sit close to the steering wheel to reach the clutch pedal and 2)not exert the extra force needed to depress the clutch. This way she can go through her pregnancy without any car-related inconveniences. Study http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/brakes.htm and http://www.m535i.org/officers/ra/articles.html#brakes (E28 and E34 brakes are interchangeable.) The E34 540i brakes provide a thicker front rotor of the same diameter you already have, and a thicker vented rear rotor of the same diameter as your current solid rear rotor. They will still fit under your 15" wheels. Several larger options are possible with BMW components. If you want to use other goodies (e.g. Mov'it from http://www.ultimategarage.com) your options are limited only by your budget and wheel size. You might try a different pad rather than Repco/PBR/Axxis Metalmasters. Lately I've been using Porterfield R4S with good results on the street and autocross. Call the phone number at http://www.porterfield-brakes.com to order, and thank them for their generous club discount. They dont look very attractive to me and have doubtful usability. My dealer says that delivery w/out the rails is not an option. When the Kormen ride was here in Cville last week I was able to inspect a 325 and the inboard side of the rails had three rubber grommets that probably cover holes that allow access to bolts securing the rails. Maybe they could be removed and the holes filled. The 540 wagon did not have these grommets.
