Having never owned an E30 until two weeks ago I have always kind-a ignored the debates regarding 'what is the perfect headbolt' for the M20 motor . NOW I have one with 238,000 miles and NO known history . I plan to adjust the valvoles soon so will have a good view of the headbolts . ...Tell me oh wise-ones are the 'good' ones hex or Torx(R) ?. There's some jibe about Ribe sticks thru my memory-cells ... Off digest replies please so as not to interfere with shifting manual trannies and such .... How much $$$ are the good sets ? I dont want the 'racing quality 'ones made from unobtainium by German field-gnomes at midnight , just those that dont lose their heads like Anne Boleyn did . I'm trying to get rid of the excessive front bias. I am currently measuring the oil temperature at the oil filter housing on the block as the oil leaves the block. I see temperatures of around 210 degrees F at a cruise on the highway. I think an oil cooler is needed. (btw, the oil used is mobil 1 10w50, if that makes any difference.) thanks - -Michael McCoy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 20:50:52 -0700 From: "Gary Tash" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Idle speed problems My 85 325e has developed a problem. The engine runs great except: 1. It has developed an idle 'surge'. The engine revs up-drops off in repeated cycles when at idle, mostly after some highway driving. If it is surging at higher rpm it is very slight and I don't notice it. 2. Low engine speed is hard to control - i.e. in 1st gear, trying to manage car and engine speed to negotiate into or out of a situation or just 'idling' through a parking lot, at some point the rpm drops off a cliff or, in the other direction jumps up the cliff. The engine speed is very difficult to control. - -Gary ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 21:29:16 -0700 From: Jim Bassett <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Oil temperature questions At 08:14 PM 6/17/03, Michael McCoy talked about: >I am currently measuring the oil temperature at the oil filter housing on >the block as the oil leaves the block. Why do you think that? 210F is pretty nearly exactly right for an M50 doing "normal" driving. That's about what my race car sees on it's drives to/from the track (200-210F), with Mobil 1 15W50 (temp also taken at oil filter housing). I've seen a high of about 250F running at Thunderhill with ambient temps in the high-90s to 100. My mechanic (Bill Arnold) said that was fine, I shouldn't worry unless it gets up to 280F or so; and he said Mobil 1 was good to about 350F. There are two possible problems: 1) ICV: The idle control valve could be sticky. Remove it, pour some O2 sensor-safe carb cleaner down it, shake it around, and pour it out. Repeat until the carb cleaner is very clean. If the ICV's resistance is too high across the terminals, the ICV is bad and needs to be replaced. 2) ICM: If the idle control module (small box next to the ECU in the glove compartment) is bad, the ICV may not even get a signal. Or, the ICM may not be "strong" enough to control the idle. The Bentley manual outlines the test procedures for these two items pretty well. That way you can determine which item is the culprit. If all else fails, use the penny kludge. Set the adjustment screw on the ICV to the middle. Drill a small hole in a penny and put it on the intake side of your ICV. Keep drilling the hole larger and larger until the car idles just fine when warm. You can use the adjustment screw to fine tune for different ambient temps. Hope this helps! I don't remember exactly what that difference is, other than that they collapse at a different rate or manner (the airbag column doesn't compress as much or as quickly, or whatever). There may be a safety issue in a frontal collision, i.e., a slight case of death. However, you put your body behind that wheel, not mine, so take the above with a grain of salt if you like.
