At least for the 7. accelerated wear when overheated is something a lot of street pads do & perhaps the R-4 as well. I did kill a set on my M coupe (they had several schools on them, but this particular day killed them seemingly quite quickly) on a track which is hard on brakes & when I wasn't that good on the brakes in general. > Strangely enough, in my only track sessions in an M3 (a few years ago in my > street car at the time), I ran a completely stock car (even stock pads) on > the harshest track (for pads/rotors) and had no trouble at all. I bet it was transfer of pad material onto the rotors instead of true warping. the stock brakes on an E36 M3 can take you a long way, they just dust like hell & will fade with tons of heat. > Any how, I am always looking for an alternative to the blues. John Van Houten is very fast in his wife's M3/4 and IIRC he liked th PF's over HT-10's when he tried them. I think he's racing with HT-10's on his KP E30 now tho. Thanks all who responded! Sounds like they are definitely worth a try. If the pad feel is improved, that's half the battle. If rotor life was even marginally better, then I'd make the switch. Once the current set of blues is used, I'll definitley give them a try. Also, thank you very much for the feedback on baseline tire pressures and torque specs. Last, after working to prepare the car over the weekend, I've now got one more Q. Where in the world to you get a 14mm allen wrench or hex socket attachment so that you can change the diff fluid!? Michael, Please slow down and read Rich's and others advise. Pad gassing, rotor/caliper side, brake upgrades and brake balance have very little if anything to do with your reported problems. You are using lousy cheap ass MM pads. Over pimped (sorry, slotted) rotors. Throw away the MMs. Get a decent set of street and a decent set of track pads. Shelve the brake upgrade day dreaming until after you had attended 3-5 DEs and learnt to drive the car. > I've faded autocross pads in a subdivision before. :oP No. You may have faded cheap ass crappy MMs. Get decent pads (at least PF R4S, PF R4 or Hawk HP+) and enjoy your brakes as they are! > I'm also known to carry extra pints of brake fluid and bleeder bottles > on my mountain trips. You may need to fix your brakes as well. There is absolutely no reason why a properly functioning BMW brake system will require anything other than annual (or pre-race event) brake bleeding. You should never ever have to top off the brake fluid. > > Here is my recommendation after watching this thread over the past > > few days. Michael, There is nothing wrong with your brake balance. Let it go! If you are adding brake fluid and bleeding brakes after a mountain drive, you have leaks. Find and fix them. If you fade cheap ass MMs at an autoX (actually, one can fade them after one good 100->20mph stop), ditch them and get decent autoX pads. > > Rich - thinks Metal Masters are junk, alone with their Deluxe brethren. Yep. > the metalmasters were recommended to me over the EBC's and the Pagid's. Do yourself a favor an find a new 'advisor'! alex f P.S.: All flavors of the EBC brake pad lineup are universally acknowledged as 'total crap pads'. P.P.S.: Pagid offers a very long menu of brake pads. Most of them are above average in price and performance. Page is OEM for some BMW pads. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 11:23:01 -0400 From: "BMWBITS" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Stupid is... As STUPID does . How long has it been since you did something REALLY stupid ? I had one this weekend .... I recently was lucky in finding a batch of early (1978-9 ) 323i fuel filters and offered some for sale on the E21 digest . Sales being made , one of the boxes was sent off to a gent in NC via USPS ... 2 weeks go by ...he hasnt got them ...I pester local P O who are obliging but suggest "They may have simply got lost and gone to another zip-code ...give them time " ....Little did they know how true those words were ! Sunday morning my step-son comes to borrow my farm-truck to haul hay . I had battery out of it (working on a new 1986 325e ) and hadnt driven the truck for maybe 3 weeks . He goes to unlatch hood from inside ....and says "What's this on front seat ?" .....It's those da*#ed fuel filters !! HOW ?? You might ask ...Well , living in rural Tenn the local mail delivery lady will always leave any parcels in a dry-spot if we arent home . She thought the farmtruck seat was a perfect spot to deliver a box addressed to me !! ...HOW ? You might ask ....Week before I sent the fuel filters I had received some other BMW parts in a nice USPS Priority Mail box .....so I re-used it for the filters ....but forgot to pull off the label addressed to me on the other end from where I addressed the filter destination .So the box took the short trip home !! Probably been there two weeks ! Tell me ..just HOW 'DUH' can a guy be ?? Does anyone else want some early 323i fuel filters ?? I'm wondering where the oil temperature sensor goes in the S52 and 54 engines since there are oil temp gauges for cars with those engines. - --Andre ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 12:33:21 -0500 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [uuc] Pad choice was Brake upgrades for E34 525 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > I like to autox my car so I like upgraded pads, my choice was the Hawk > HP+ for the front and Hawk HPS in the rear only because Bob Tunnell > also made this choice and I doubt a single person on this list can > outdrive him in an autox course. Carlos, How do front HP+ behave on the street? I've heard they are squeaky and dirty dirty pads. Your experience? I'm currently running HPS pads all around. While their dust is a wheel-matching off-silver color, are mostly quiet and they never fade on the street, I did get them to fade a few times at our TX autoXs. I had the same impression when I put on the S-03s after my Yokohama AVS Sports wore out --- the S-03s felt softer, had less road feel, etc. But I couldn't separate out the hardness of the AVS Sports caused by 20k miles and 13 or 14 track days, so I wonder how much of that is due to the extra NVH giving me the impression that the S-03s were softer. That is, if I had compared new AVS Sports to new S-03s back to back, would I still have felt the same way? - --Andre ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #6498 *************************** | | In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. |________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | | Autoscope-Motorsports - http://www.autoscope-motorsports.com | |==================================================== | | Koala MotorSport .
