After reading the procedure for changing the rear wheel bearings in the Bentley manual, it appears that a fair amount of the rear drive parts have to be removed to get to the bearings. Can someone who has done this work please advise me on the standard items that should be replaced if one is this far into things? It will also be handy to have all of the parts and supplies on hand before I take the car out of commission. TIA for any suggestions. Well I bought a rear view mirror with map lights off a guy on baye30.net. Now I need to find 12v so the lights will work. I have a 89 325i, so no power sunroof. I have heared of people taping into that wire. Is that wire pre-wired with 12v up to were my hand crank for the sun roof is? Like the tweeter pods are in the doors. I'm looking the ETK there is a violet wire that goes into the Check Control at pin one, running off Fuse 4, a 15amp. Can I splice into this? Anyone know what car this Rear view mirror with map lights came out of? I think I may have seen them in M3's. Thanks for any insights. Anyone done this mod? My 325iS came with a connector up there. It was well hidden under black fabric tape. Mated perfectly with the mirror. These mirrors were standard in special edition E30, E24, E28 models from a 316i to the M3 and M5 which is where Americans saw them. Just like the tweeter pods you mention, I found that the wiring for the door lock heaters was in the doors just waiting for an upgrade. I suspect that the magic 12v switched line is up there just waiting for you to use it. Now that I say it, I go look in my Bentleys and notice that it may not be so... If you can locate a 2.5mm green and blue wire, that should be it. If you can't then that means they install that wire with the "sunroof harness" and snake it down to C305, a single pin connector beneath the left side of the instrument panel, next to C302, a 25 pin connector. Take a look, it might be there. If you do find it, I would install a smaller fuse in line with the lights. That green and blue line the sun roof uses is fused at 30A. - -- Joe, nothin' but book learnin' on this one. - -- Joseph M. Thus more slippery. Same as a normal compound car tire on frozen roads. Less friction so the rubber slips easier. Also if you think about it, the hole in the middle gets slightly larger since it is the ring of rubber that contracts about the circular geometric center of it donut shape. By freezing the arm, the metal shrinks slightly. Also by starting colder, it will warm the rubber on the bushing on contact slower, thus giving more time to pop the bushing on before the bushing rubber gets warmer and stickier. I prefer since silicon lube is what's provided for other rubber to metal assemblies on the car, such as brake hydraulic rebuild kits. Also it was recommended to my by wise old sages years ago and I've been using it since then w/o problems. Silicon spray or grease is inert against rubber. If soap and water works for others, that's freedom of modification. Why I avoid it is the idea of the rubber to metal contact surface is that the bushing rubber stays in firm contact with the control arm metal due to pressure of the compressed rubber on the arm's round metal surface. With soap and water, no guarantee the soap won't react with the rubber. The rubber will stick to the metal once the soap residue washes out. That can make subsequent removal much more difficult. (How do I know?) This sticking behavior is more easily seen when trying to press out, for instance, 2002 to E30 rear trailing arm bushings. Having changed E3/4x front control arm bushings numerous times, I've got the procedure down pretty well. Btw, a standard tool called a "Water Pump or Alternator Pully Puller" is just right for pulling the bushing in its holder off the arm. I used to hack saw through the metal ring arund the bushing, now I bang a ball joint fork between the metal ring and the bushing holder until the metal ring collapses inward. Then one good zets with a mallet against the bushing and it pops out of the holder. They said that they needed to adjust the camber (currently reading -2degrees on the front right) by adjusting the outer tie rod. But they couldn't get the nut free. After some researching, it seems that the nut is a lock nut mainly to remove the tie rod which screws onto the inner tie rod. Please correct me if I'm wrong. There are marks on the inner tie rod, probably from a wrench that the alignment people were using. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 00:47:28 -0400 From: "KMS - Brett Anderson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [uuc] E30 Rear view mirror with map lights. I disagree. The E30 was the last of the BMWs to use independent harnesses. While I've never checked for the mirror wiring, in my experience, only the doors are fully wired. Kyle, The mirror came in e28 M5 and e30 M3, IIRC. On my previous e28, I used the sunroof motor to get the lights working. Using the same mirror on my current e28, I've used the wire on the check control connector that's hot in ACC or ON. There's also a wire that's hot only in ON and a wire that's always hot. Take your pick at which one you want. You mentioned using the ETK, but I'm assuming you're using ETM? If so, then there will be information in there under the Check Control section on which wire is hot when. Hope this helps.
