You are correct, the car has a bad actuator. Larry, the door lock actuator in passenger door is bad. The actuator's motor is still working, which is why you can lock and unlock from the other locations. However, the E36 actuator is mounted directly to the lock assembly, and as a result, there are no microswitches on the lock cylinder, to report lock/unlock. Instead, when you turn the key, it physically moves the actuator, which "sees" this movement and reports it to the General Module. The GM then tells the other locks that they should lock, or unlock, as the case may be. The monitoring switches inside your actuator have gone bad. The fix is to replace the actuator, which can be a real pain in the arse, but is not impossible. I can't recall now, if it was even earlier than that. I do recall the very first E36's were R12, so the change over occurred somewhere between 1991 and 1994. Chris: If I understand you correctly, you can physically move the fan around (and I don't mean spin), right? If that is the case, it is no the clutch, but the waterpump that is failing. The waterpump supplies the axle for the fan pulley that hold the fan clutch, etc. You will hear noises, then a grinding, then coolant leaks and finally it will all fall apart in a mess of roller bearings. If this is the case, STOP DRIVING AT ONCE and fix it. Neil Deshpande *** "Crawford, Scott" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> While poking around the engine compartment listening to alternators and AC ompressors, I discover there is play in the fan clutch. I can wiggle the fan front to back and see the movement in the clutch. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 10:01:49 -0400 From: Ed MacVaugh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] E30 fan clutch failing? Neil and Chris, That has not been my experience. When my E28 M5 clutch (same as my E30 ones) failed last month, there was so much play between the clutch and hub that it spewed ball bearings around my engine compartment. In that case, the play was between the clutch body (with the radial cooling fins) and the hub (with the 32mm nut). My water pump was fine. The recommendation is the same, however, Don't drive in this condition. If that lets go completely, it will bounce around the engine compartment and dent the underside of the hood, take off belts and other nasty things. Thanks to first-hand experience of the wet/dry track, and despite a 100lb weight penalty, Auberlen was able to set the fastest time on his second flying lap. Conditions worsened during the session and his time stayed planted at the top. Other Turner Motorsport drivers Will Turner and Frank Selldorff scored 14th and 24th starting positions for tomorrow's 50-minute race. Auberlen set the fastest time in this morning's Speed GT qualifying session. He then got into his Turner Motorsport BMW and repeated the feat for his second Touring Car pole position of 2003. His pole winning lap time of 1:39:320 was .071 seconds faster than the Mazda Protg of Shauna Marinus. "My track surface knowledge was definitely an advantage," said Auberlen, who also took the Speed Touring Car pole at Sebring International Raceway. As rained poured harder other drivers were left searching for the few remaining dry sections of racetrack. Despite Auberlen's pole winning time, the Turner Motorsport drivers do not expect to match up to the superior straight-line speed of the Mazda Protege. Tomorrow's round of the Speed Touring Car Championship kicks off at 12:30pm. Forty cars are expected to start the event and fans can keep track of the race on the main series website at http://www.world-challenge.com/2003/events/rat1/livetiming.html. And don't miss Speed Channel's broadcast of this race on July 12 at 3pm ET. Click on http://www.world-challenge.com/2003/events/rat1/tc-qual.html to see this session's results.
