I guess BMW NA should do the thinking, as the factory certainly got it
right. The C320K is, or was, pitched a fair bit higher than the 325i in
most other places, and suffers for it. Also I suspect you must be getting a
souped-up C230K where you are - not all markets get the C240 2.6 V6 so
perhaps the K is boosted to bridge the gap. The only direct comparison I
have for figures is 325ti vs C230K Sport Coupe, and the 325ti outsprints the
Merc in every discipline by a good 10-15%. And with BMW outselling the
C-class at least two-to-one in practically every market, they probably
couldn't care less if it didn't.

All very good and valid points, but for BMW it's throttle response. You can
make it sharp, but not razor-sharp. Turbo lag, as opposed to off-boost
lethargy (which is something quite different), can never be completely
eradicated without using WRC-type technology. I don't believe BMW will be
building any turbocharged *petrol/gas/gasoline/benzine* engines for the
foreseeable future, and as for the rumours of a twin-turbo six, all I can
say is "Subaru Legacy B4".

And that engine was bulletproof to the core. (Though to be fair it's a 22
bhp (DIN) increase at peak - a not inconsiderable 7%.) The random engine
detonations were unfortunate, as it sullied the reputation of a great engine
line, particularly for many disappointed American buyers. If BMW had built
the E46 to be as light as the E36 in the M application, they wouldn't have
needed to go the last mile.

This was at AKG Motorsports. The brake booster was
relocated to fit the V8. All 4 corners were upgraded
to M3 specs. The rear brakes looks much bigger than my
M3s'.

BTW, Andy has his sleeper Euro M3 powered 318 w/3.46
forsale. It may still be available.

The only 6 spd that will bolt up is from the 6/94 and later E34 M5. As this
trans never made it to the US, you won't find one in a junkyard, which
leaves the risk associated with buying from a European junk yard, or new.

New is ~$4800 plus you'll need up to $1500 worth of additional parts to make
it work in your car.

RE:In car Tool Kit

I have a big bag in my main car,

3/8" ratchet, small set of 9-19 mm sockets, a set of snappy box wrenches..
metric 10-19 mm socket set, short and long rachet handles, a few different
length wobble extensions, a set of inch sockets and box wrenches, a pry
bar, a ball peen hammer, a few various sized hose clamps, and a few short
lengths of fuel line hose, a few alligator clip jumper wires, a few fuses,
a 20' piece of kevlar 1/2" rope, jumper cables, some extra light bulbs,
both headlight and signal lamps,
Big screwdriver.. a couple of smaller phillips and regular screwdrivers,
electrical crimpers and a fe w butt splices, teflon pipe tape, a
flashlight, a set of channel lock pliers, electrical tape, a set of allen
wrenches/ball driver, a set of torx drivers in a folding handle, a big
crescent wrench, some zip ties, some rtv silicone, some silicone grease in
a tube, some heat shrink tubing, , a hack saw, some epoxy, often a BIG set
of channel locks and a BIG crescent wrench(think trailer hitch ball nuts),
a set of metric six point sockets, a set of 1/4 " sockets and an adapter to
the 3/8'' drive,
a multi tester, a few jacknives, etc. I used to keep most of this stuff
in the roll away, but I found that it was really handy to have the main
tool set with me most places I was.

I find I use most of the stuff on other things besides the car, but it is
handy to have wherever you are..you can fix the boat , the plumbing at the
vacation house.. also remove the alternator or starter on the road in the
parking lot of the auto parts store..I can do a Suburban starter or
alternator in under 15 minutes!
Bimmers are harder to fix than trucks, as they are lower and tighter. I
keep spare belts in the boat, plane and cars as well.

My new favorite flashlight for working on stuff, the Ray o Vac LED 3 in
one headlamp, $15 at Wal
Mart! http://www.rayovac.com/products/flashlights/new.shtml Coolest light
I've ever owned, runs 100 hrs on 3 AAA batteries, and aims the light right
where you need it..just the thing for those late night fan belt roadside
replacements!

All of the other vehicles have those little $20.00 socket/box
wrench/pliers/screwdriver tool kits from Autozone, with cheap tools..these
do well for on the road emergency repairs, and are so much more tools than
none, also each car has a tow line and jumper cables, but the big bag tends
to go on real road trips with me.
It also does a nice job of ballasting the rear end in the winter!

In the daily driver, you could downgrade the engine to make it a 528e. My
'84 got over 30MPG on the highway.

Brett is always reluctant to trumpet his own accomplishments, luckily
there are plenty of very happy people to do that.

I am one of those people. Brett did my 6-speed in the M5, which is
the same transmission fitment as your 535i:

You couldn't downgrade the engine in 1982. Couldn't
upgrade it either. Not in the US at least. :-)

In Europe, you could downgrade it even more than a
525e: 520i (2.0L M20) and even 518i (1.8L I-4).

Makes a 528e seem peppy! :-)

For the most part (and of course, YMMV), they say as long as it's not a
timed competitive event, it's OK. They specifically took out the policy
language that mentioned "off road use" to allow each claim to be judged
on it's own merit (AKA, up to the rep who handles that claim). That
means, if you get a sympathetic bloke, or one who understands the
difference between a driver school and Thursday night lapping sessions,
you'd be OK. It goes without saying, so of course I'll say it anyhow,
those Thursday night lapping sessions and the like are not covered.

Subject: [uuc] Starter Ring gear for E32 735iA

Group, Since I replaced the head gasket, I have developed the need to fix
another difficult problem. I need a new used (new ones are about $280) ring
gear (starter drive plate?) for my 735iA. There is a 4" section where the
teeth are all but gone. These engines stop at three spots on the ring gear,
so about one of every three times I start the car the starter grinds in the
area of the missing teeth. I think the part number is 11 221 287 935. Does
anyone have a good source for a good used ring gear? Thanks again for any
help.

Not bad, it's July 3rd and I just pulled my July Roundel out of the
mailbox. Even better, the long-promised BMWFilms DVD was included
inside! This DVD appears to contain the five films from the first DVD
as well as the three new ones (Hostage, Ticker, Beat the Devil).

Must .. keep .. working... Cannot .. watch .. DVD...
