It looks like it will take ~$8K investment (parts and labor) to convert an
E34 535i to a 6 speed. Assuming gas at $2 a gallon, an optimistic 5mpg
improvement with the 6 speed on Dave's 100 mile commute it will take about
15 years for the gas savings to pay for the tranny (right about the time the
car turns over 500,000 miles). For half the cost of putting a 6 speed in
the 535i you can buy a an early M20 powered 525i and get even better
mileage. If I had a 535i with over 200K I would sell it as fast as I could
since car values drop like a rock the closer you get to 300K (ask me how I
know). The car that it sounds like you will be happy with is a M50 powered
525i. There are tons of nice ones out there and they are almost at fast as
the 535i (19 less hp,but they weigh a little less). My best friends wife
has a 1994 525i and is gets at least 5mpg better than my old E34 535i.

P.S. If you had the cash sitting around it sure would be cool to have Brett
make a 6 speed E34 535i...

When I turn my steering wheel, it sometimes squeaks - sort of a
metal on metal sound. Anyone know how to fix this? Thank you.

Groups, I have borrowed a sound level meter from GGCer Jim Ochi (thanks
Jim). It is the fancy schmancy Radio Shack digital one ($50 at Radio Shack,
not sure what Jim's rental fee is gonna be, guess I should have figured that
out before he dropped it off here). (Actually, the cost to buy this one is
less than the daily rental on a real live professional meter.) It did not
come with instructions. If you can tell me how to operate this thing,
please contact me PRIVATELY and let me know.

While this could be used to measure BMW sound levels (OBMWC), I've borrowed
it to measure the noise my daughter's swim team makes. I thought it would
be nice to counter the neighbor complaints with real live measurements.

Power is turned on and off with the "range" knob. There are 7 settings, 60
thru 120 in increments of 10. I only get a numerical sound level reading
when it is set to 60. In all other settings, it just says "LO".

I can toggle it between the db "a" scale and the "c" scale. I've never seen
anything but the "a" scale used, so I assume that's what I want. I can also
toggle between fast and slow response. I'll probably use slow.

The other buttons are DH, Reset, Min and Max. If you can help me understand
how to use these 4 buttons, I'd appreciate the help.

TIA,

Scott,

Easy on the parentheses there, pal! :-)

Maybe what you should do is just a few 4,000 RPM
clutch drops right in front of the neighbor's house.
That way, the swim team won't seem so bad.

Or does a 325i have enough torque to spin the tires at
4,000? Maybe you should try 6200?

spin the tires at even 4 grand!
'85 535i <-- wheelspin on demand, even at 2000 with
the TRXes!

Subject: [uuc] E34 525 "Service Engine" Risk Assessment (URGENT)

I'm trying to firm up a deal on a car that is about 2 hours away - I haven't
been to see it yet.

The car's "SERVICE ENGINE" light is on. The dealer (not BMW) has made two
offers.

Price X - take the car as-is and assume all risk associated with the light -
I can get the car today.
Price X + $500 - They will take the car to a BMW dealer and have the Service
Engine light taken care of - they will hold the car until my next chance to
get it, 7/14.

Another digest member familiar with E34s has seen and driven the car and
given a very positive assessment.

How much risk am I taking that the Service Engine light will cost me more
than $500?

Thanks folks

If the dealer does a complete Inspection II that would be about $500. If
you do your own work, a quick oil change may be all you need to get it home.
You may not even need that. I assume you are referring to the service
indicator, not the check engine light.

You can do the 5 pump code readout and check faults on the check engine side
of things.

The E34 does not have a "Service Engine" light.

If the "Check Engine" light is on, then you have the risk of it being an
expensive fix.

If the "Oil Service" or "Inspection" light is on, then that is simply a
timed notification that the car is due for routine service, and you
shouldn't be concerned about it. In fact, if it's either of these two, then
the trip to the dealer will be simply to turn off the lights, without
performing any of the maintenance, and you'll be out $500.

Confirm which light is on and deal with it accordingly.

I had the dealer go out and confirm the light. He says "Check Engine light
on the left side of the dash".

I found a list of the codes, so I can see what the computer thinks the
problem is anyway.

Thanks.
