Many certainly are. But, having once had the perspective from the other side of the counter (parts in my case), some customers really need to reevaluate how reasonable their demands are, and whether their conduct measures up to common standards of decency. Granted, ponying up for a $30-$80k car gives you some pretty broad leeway, but I saw some pretty unforgiveable prima donna behavior (yelling, personal insults). You'd go the extra mile for the 2002 guys, covered head-to-toe in grease looking for an obscure part, but still able to say "thanks for the effort", before the prick with the wad of cash and the new M3 trying to get a special order with a mixture of insults and disdain. I just read in Car and Driver Mag aug 2003 ed. about the merc SL65 AMG. Ok who needs 604HP and 738Lb/ft of torque? Are we going mad? Did anyone notice that most US highways have a 55mph speed limit? My stock '98 M3 is a lot of fun, with enough power that I never really have to floor it because of traffic conditions. Sure it's nice doing it every once in a while but any red line after 2nd gear and I'm already in trouble with the trooper at the next trap. The only time I can really enjoy it is at the track and I can have fun at the local autoX too. 240HP need respect @ the track 604Hp need a schumacher to really enjoy it. That much power won't be even appreciated until you are well above the 55mph. I think that they are just asking for trouble. I'm waiting for that guy talking on the cell w 738Lb/ft of torque. Ouch!!! Paul, This is not normal (aux fan should be on at low speed with AC on), but it's not necessarily broken. More likely, in the order of probability: 1. the 30?AMP aux fan fuse had blown. Replace as needed. 2. the aux fan resistor has fried. Run Bentley tests on the resistor (manually short the coolant temp feed to the aux fan to induce low/high speed runs). 3. the $300 aux fan itself is fried. Not pretty and a minor PITA to replace. alex f ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 12:30:59 -0400 From: "Bill Matthews" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] New Shell Gasoline - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vic Maslanka" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2003 11:28 AM Subject: Re: [uuc] New Shell Gasoline > "Shell Oil Products US and Motiva Enterprises LLC today introduced new > gasolines that are specially formulated to improve fuel economy by > reducing friction in the engine." > > Are we to infer that fewer deposits (from more detergents) equals > reduced friction? I think they are attributing it to reduced friction between the rings and the cylinder wall from having a cleaner combustion chamber. From an FTC point of view they don't have to prove the connection only the claim that having more detergent gives better gas mileage (on the EPA cycle). I'd forgotten that Motiva was owned by Shell. The local Motiva refinery has a long history of being a "bad" neighbor with sloppy maintenance and environmental practices even when compared to other refinery and chemical operations. Yesterday the company plead "no contest" to criminally negligent homicide in the death of a construction worker in a sulfuric acid tank explosion in 2001. Having spent a large part of my career in the chemical process industry (including explosives manufacture) and had a stint marketing additives to refineries over 20 years ago I am amazed that these guys can even make gasoline that works. A link to the latest part of this saga is below. This is from today's paper. In the print version, in another section, the refinery manager has a full page mea culpa ad and promises they have changed their ways. http://www.delawareonline.com/newsjournal/local/2003/07/10stateopensnewmo.ht ml for the tiny people with tiny browsers http://tinyurl.com/gju7 Bill Matthews Hockessin DE 00 M Geeze cars ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 12:34:34 -0400 (EDT) From: tabe johnson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] <E30> Which were the best brake disks?
