I've wired radiator fans with an SPST switch to operate, never, always, and
per the temp sensor. Its nice to have full control, but also nice to set
and forget sometimes. Feed power to the relay coil and run the ground wire
to the switch common. One pole goes to ground, the other goes to the temp
switch.

there's a bunch of gas price places on the web including
http://www.garnetknight.com/gas/

currently regular costs ~$0.70 a litre and premium is usually ten cents
more..

exchange rate is..umm.. $1 US = $1.36 cdn and 3.9 litres pre US Gallon so
that makes regular about.. umm.. two bucks a gallon?

Thanks Brad,

I have been a member for about 3 years. I just wasn't sure of my membership
number. Customer service at the BMW CCA is always so friendly. The woman
on the phone offered to send me a new card and sticker for my (my wife's)
car.

I have a C240/6 speed. And let me tell you that although it is a great
car
to drive on the road, for the track it is terrible. Too many electronic
nannies
that can't be turned off and the clutch/brake/gas pedal setup leaves a
lot
to be desired.

OTOH, the suspension is as supple but responsive as any BMW I have
driven.
And luxury-wise, BMW can not compare.

When my wife's choice for a new car came down to either an '03 330ci or
CLK320, I told her to think of the BMW as a car that started as a sport
coupe and had "luxury" added and to look at the CLK as a luxury coupe that
had "sport" added. Trying to get to the same place from different starting
points doesn't always yield the same result.

She thought the analogy fit very well, unfortunately (from my point of view)
she choose the CLK ;^(

Well I don't have a switch, but I used a splice in
connector on the thermostat wires and put in a fused
wire when I need the extra cooling. If you put it on
all theree you can then choose between the high and
low setting.

As far as the switch, you are on your own. I felt it
was too much work to run a switch since I have the
fogs and the a/c yet. I just pop the hood and connect
it.

. . .

I'm reminded of Shaw's response to
a lady criticising Pygmalion, "Madam, I agree with
you, but what can I do. I'm in the minority." . . .

I really like Mercedes, always have. It is _the_ car
to have in India.

Neil Deshpande

Hmmm - a very good photo exhibit we saw in DC indicated that the Ambassador
was the omnipresent car in India. Deferring to your personal knowledge, but
perhaps your statement could be expanded to read that the Ambassador is the
car you have in India but Mercedes is _the_ car to have. Though I get the
feeling that Mercedes probably WAS among the cars your family had!
  Enjoyed the bit o' Shaw.

A friend of mine just took his V8 powered 5 series in for Maryland's emissions
testing. It passed, but came back with a carbon emissions reading that was just under
the pass/fail line. A year ago it was almost undetectable. What can increased carbon
emissions be an indicator of? Thanks in advance,

Certainly many models of Merc area available outside the USA with manuals.

Not quite AFAIK. At least in the US, the SLK and the C-class are the only
Mercs available with manuals. The CLK is NOT available with a manual tranny,
although it would fix its weakest point if it was. The Mercedes "touch
shift" 5-sp auto is just awful--there is a maddening delay of *many* seconds
before it responds to your downshifts. It is so bad that we preferred to
buy a '99 with the older auto tranny instead of the 2000+ CLK. The CLK V8s
would be really terrific cars with a proper manual box.

I'll give some kudos to Bill Cleary at Perillo BMW in Lincoln Park. He's a straight
shooter, no pressure salesman. Nice guy too. Helped me out a few times with the
service dept. and quickly refunded a deposit I had down on a car when I lost my job.

Jonathan Brush asks...Also, what do you think of the strategy of
deciding what car you want and doing your negotiating by fax (or internet)?

I advocate using any means available to you, and with which you are
comfortable using. Comfortable is the operative word here. While I was
selling cars however, I hated the internet because I never got a chance
with them. The one internet salesman at my dealership sold over half
the cars that went off the lot each month. In fact, he was the only one
making a decent living.

All of the 0% financing deals don't really help sales at all. In order
to qualify for the 0%, you need a really great FICO score, 140 or so.
Guess what, only the folks that don't really need the 0% rate qualify
for it. If you don't have a job, you don't qualify for any kind of loan
anyway, and that is the real problem. The 0% rates won't solve that.

I found my '00 540 through Carpoint, and that got me to the fleet
manager and the fleet price. I saved almost $6000 on the MSRP of the
car. Since the sale price was lower, I also saved on sales tax.

Gary's experience of playing good guy-bad guy with his wife will work
very vell in a lot of cases. The sales staff will also do that
occasionally.

A lot of folks look at the negotiating experience as a challenge and
somewhat enjoyable. Those were the customers that were a real pleasure
to deal with. It was genuine head to head competition, and a lot of fun.

Cheers
Steve Albrecht

When I take my 6 speed Merc in, I usually get a 5 speed auto as a loaner.
My experience with the touch shift has actually been quite positive after
the first 10 miles or so where the car actually learns that it is driven
in enthusiast mode. Still not as good as the Tip S in the Boxster but quite
nice.

The AMG calibration of the tranny is supposed to be even better.

Still, I would take a BMW (or Mini) over any Mercedes any day.

Carbon dioxide or monoxide? Probably monoxide. Likely cause is rich
mixture from a worn out EGO sensor. Might be other things. Hard to tell
with no data.
