Easiest way I've found is to not let people smoke in my car.

Once it's there the only reliable way I've found is to use an ozonator like the hotels
use.

You can get small ones for a car from Bavarian Auto, Brookstone, and a host of other
places, about $30 for ones that plug into the lighter port.

Leaving a smoldering butt inside the car is one way. Park it on the
street though to avoid damage to your garage and/or house.

Anyone out there have a Hartge muffler for my 88 M6? My guess is that
it would be compatible with all 6 series (and maybe e28 5 series) unless
someone tells me different.

Chris -

System pressure does not tell you much about refrigerant charge. The
system should contain both gaseous and liquid refrigerant in equilibrium
with each other. If it does, the system pressure is determined by the
type of refrigerant and the temperature - the level of charge has no
effect at all. If the system is so depleted that no liquid remains, the
pressure will be below that of the two-phase system.

If your refrigerant can emptied into your system faster with the
compressor off than on, you were connected to the compressor discharge
line. You should have been connected to the compressor suction line..

Subject: [uuc] AC follow-up & questions

I made my first attempt at adding some refrigerant today - figured I
might as well try that first. I bought a charge hose with a little
gauge on it and followed the directions with it since Bentley doesn't
say much about
charging. The gauge has a little blue zone that is defined as
acceptable,
and ranges from 25 to 45 psi. I added a couple cans of refrigerant and
wound up at about 35psi and left it at that. A couple of questions:

. . . . When I turned the fan setting down and
the compressor shut off for a second, the bottle emptied pretty much
immediately. Am I supposed to leave the compressor running and just
wait
all afternoon? What is the recommended procedure here?

It should be compatible with all e28s, as well. The
Euro e28 535i exhaust system was the exact same as on
the Euro 635CSi. I just checked my components a
couple of hours ago, and they say "BMW 635CSi" on
them. :-)

Actually that's pretty much the way it is right now. Flange gasket between cat and
tailpipe is gone and tailpipe terminates where
muffler should begin. Except for heat and fume concerns I like the sound; certainly
less noisy than all those Harley's running around
here. I have contemplated having the gasket replaced and just welding pipes to extend
out the back.

E12 5 series up to 81 and E24 6 series up to 82/83 use the same exhaust set
up and mechanically are the same chassis

E28 5 series 82 up to 88 and E24 83 up to 89 use the same exhaust and
mechanically are the same chassis.

Shocks, brakes etc etc are all the same between the 2 cars.

costs for an E30 go from ~$200 (oem/ bosal/ ansa/ 2-3 year life) to ~$700
(supersprint, remus, stebro, etc)

steel (or aluminized steel) will last a couple of years, stainless steel
will last for ever.. although you have to watch out, some of the pricey
mufflers have stainless steel cans and aluminized steel pipes.. who cars if
the can lasts forever if all the pipes rust out after 2 years??

how loud is loud? I got a dynomax can & had the local muffler shop weld on
some pipe to fit my '74 2002 and it sets off car alarms.. was dirt cheap for
the whole deal (<$100) but is fairly noisy. Dynomax are available everywhere
and are excellent flowing (straight through!!) but need welding to make 'em
fit.

I've taken the car on long road trips, and at 75mph the exhaust is no louder
than the wind noise (flying brick!) so it's not a big deal.

I also helped a friend install a 'cherry bomb' $20 muffler on his MR2 (he's
a student with no cash!). It is now too loud to drive anywhere for extended
periods.. uncomfortable drone!!!! (it took a few months for all the
fiberglass to disintegrate)

I have a Stebro (http://www.stebro.net) system on my E30 325i and it sounds
awesome. Great growl at idle and off the line, but no resonance or booming
at highway speeds, and it's a completely free flow design (no baffles). They
also have euro resonators that bolt right in (if you remove your cat for off
road use).

there are 3 basic muffler technologies out there
- -baffles- pipe comes in and extends into the can, has holes in it, and a
separate pipe leaves, with holes it it, and maybe some baffles in and around
them.. quiet, but not great flowing.. OEM and most generic mufflers are like
this

- -perforated tube- pipe goes straight through the can in one end and out the
other.. pipe has holes and is wrapped with noise absorbing material.
Excellent flow/power, but lots of noise. Triflow, dynomax and others are
like this.
This is how 'glasspaks' 'cherry bombs' and other cheapo performance mufflers
are also made.. although they use fiberglass as the sound absorbing
material.. it burns up and blows out after a short while making them get
louder and louder they age.
Quality systems use stainless steel wool, rock wool, and other stuff to
absorb the sound. These also will last a little longer than fiberglass!!

- -absorbing can- the whole can is left empty (no pipes or baffles inside)
except for sound absorbing material around the walls.. flow is totally
unrestricted but sound waves bounce around and are absorbed.. Excellent flow
and power, but not too loud. Stebro makes these. You can see right through
my muffler with a flashlight, but with the windows closed on the highway
cruising at 85mph it's as quiet as OEM.

For cheap and loud, but mostly legal, get a Dynomax.
I'd avoid the cherry bomb really cheap stuff.. it's uncomfortably loud and
drones.
For even cheaper and louder, a straight pipe (or bent and exiting out the
side of the car) is even better but bring ear plugs or wear your helmet all
the time :)
ya, like *that* won't attract attention!!

For everything else, there are lots of good systems, it will mostly come
down to 'which sound do I like better'.

I can't believe how tough it was to find a 5/16 12 point socket for my 1998
Range Rovers P38s valve cover bolts (almost every place I went to only had 6
point). I happened to find one at Orchard Supply Hardware (now owned by
Sears). I also bought a set of the new Craftsman locking 1/4" extenders
that work great. All 8 of my valve cover bolts were real loose.

So my father has a '95 740i. A trusted mechanic recently changed the
"lifetime" transmission fluid and now the transmission whines. It's driving
my father crazy.

The mechanic says he used a BMW brand filter and I have no reason to doubt
him.

Anyone know how to fix this?
