Kevin,

When my car was a member of the National Capital Chapter, it was
faithfully cared for by Lothar at Excluservice in Rockville, MD. (301)
231-5400. Still have lots of buddies down your way who take their
"legacy" rides to Lothar.

The big circlip-type ring which holds the lock cylinder in place will have a
resistor attached to it if you have door lock heaters. If you do and they
don't work, don't bother fixing them.. they have been known to get stuck
'on' getting pretty hot and melting stuff

Subject: [uuc] E32 Radio Problem

I have a problem with the radio in my 90 735il....it just quit playing
today. It had developed the famous "scratchy" sound in the on/off/volume
control switch. I was driving along this morning with the radio playing and
it just quit putting out sounds...it still lights up showing the station
etc. One other thing, I get no sounds from either the tape deck or CD
player...everything is original equipment.
Anyone had the same problem....where should I start the trouble shooting
exercise?

Thanks,
Danny

Subject: [uuc] E36 Central Locking Problem

I have a 1994 325is that seems to have a central locking problem. I can no
longer unlock all the locks by unlocking just one door. I need to unlock
each door/trunk individually. I replaced one of the fuses and that fixed
the problem but a few hours later the problem came back. The fuse didn't
look blown though. One of the main problems with this is it locks my gas
lid. Anyone experience this before and what was the fix? Also, is there an
auxiliary gas lid release?

Subject: [uuc] M20 oil pan removal for 525iA

I'm trying to remove the oil pan per Bentley but have run into a snag. The
transmission reinforcement plate won't budge on one side. I've removed four
hex head screws visible from the bottom of the plate and four (plus one more
for good luck) reverse torx screws visible from the transmission side.

The plate will not move on the driver's side. I can pry from the passenger
side and it will rotate but seems bound on the driver's side by the starter.
I've left it be fearing the plate may break if forced to far. Whacking with
a rubber mallet has no effect.

Any advice?

Cheers,

Roland

Subject: [uuc] FW: Is it brake caliper rebuild time?

My 95 M3 (80K) pulls slightly to the right under _hard_ braking. I have
recently replaced most of the suspension components as follows:

H&R track springs
Koni SA
Ground control solid shock mounts
Ground control spherical bushing RTABs
Front control arms
Ground control spherical control arm bushings

After all of that, I had it aligned to stock specs at a local
dealership. I am running Hawk HP+ with new Euro floating rotors in the
front and new stock rears, SS brake lines and ATE Super blue. Sometimes
it seems like the front right brake is dragging, I think that because if
I am next to a truck or concrete barrier I can sometimes hear a quiet
rhythmic squeak that keeps time with road speed and my right front wheel
seems to have more brake dust than the others.

My suspicion is that it's time for a caliper rebuild, just coming to you
guys for a sanity check before I dive in.

Thanks

Gas lid release - open trunk and look at the servo that opens and closes the
lock mechanism. There should be a plastic pull tab that will unlock the
lid.

Check the fuse again or just replace it. I suspect you have a short
somewhere in the system or something on that circuit is drawing a big load.
See what else is listed for that fuse and then start disconnecting each
thing until you find the problem. Hopefully it's not in the wiring harness.

BTW - if you need either the gas lid actuator or the trunk lock actuator I
have both gathering dust in my garage. cheap.

Look closely at the pivot point, there is something holding it there.

jack up the car and rotate the front wheel. It should turn relatively
freely. If you really have to push on it or you can hear the wheel dragging
it could be time for a rebuild. I had a similar problem on my 95 M3 (race
car) but I didn't need to do a rebuild. After lubing caliper guide pins and
smoothing the area with a file on the carrier that the pads slide on
everything was fine.

Somebody else will likely reply with the answer to the problem. If not,
check the archives as it comes up regularly.

There should be a grey release to pull on in the trunk on the right
side, near where the gas fill tube is, to release the lid.

Could also be captioned .."Car seats " .
I havent seen the owners manual on a new BMW for some time , so I am
wondering ......is it similar in its mandates relative to Child seats to
the Toyota Tundra truck manual ? Bought a new Tundra and the Largest -by
FAR -section in that manual deals with the correct (and incorrect ) ways
to mount child-seats in the rear seats (yes, it's an Extracab ) . It's
amazing , must be 20 pages of do's and dont's .....almost as if they
expect kids to still be alive after a long drive . Only the
radio/tape/CD gets anything like the same length/detail of instruction
and its only 4 pages .GONE are the days of 'strap em in and tape em
shut' car trips
Glad my kids are 37 and 39 yrs old !!
PS Thirty-odd yrs ago I worked for company developing the explosive for
airbags . If you need to convince yourself of the benefits of being
strapped in a car during a head-on watch a slo-mo of a simulated
Unstrapped-in child coming up out of back seat ,over fronts and being
squished FLAT in the wedge between windshield and dash -can u spel
'missile'?. You only need to see it once to get the message .
PPS How many digesters have watched an inevitable (you can SEE it coming
from afar ) accident and seen what happens when the airbags deploy ? I
did once ..lady in Plymouth didnt stop and sideswiped someone ...She
literally disappeared in the cloud of DUST and junk inside the car
