I'm very familiar with the range of modifications available to the S50
powerplant. I've been playing with one for a little while now.

We're not looking for legroom as much as hauling room...We're in that "new
couple running to Home Depot every weekend phase of our lives. We
considered a Honda Odyssey for about 2 mins, but after driving a passat
wagon ,she decided we're not ready to stray too far from our car roots yet.
looking at a couple of the moderate SUVs (Highlander, Pilot) as well as BMW
and Saab 9.5 wagons.

Yeah, I wish I could drop the steering rack from my 325 into my wife's M3.
Yes it's not as quick, but it has better feel IMO.

Those ratios are for the automatic, no?

All BMW's 5 speed manuals from the 90's are 1:1 5th.

There is no reason a 325 would have better steering feel than an M3. I
suspect tire and alignment issues.

Group

I have persuaded my future brother in law to look at a BMW along with the
WRX. They live in Santa Clarita and I would like to recommend a dealer to
use. I know this has been hashed out before but until now I only paid
attention to the east coast recommendations. TIA.

Marc

If you are going down this path, may I suggest a Suburban or
Excursion or better yet, a full size crew cab pick-up truck.

I have been there and done that. A station wagon will not be
enough when you are hauling pavers for the backyard and
when you need to tow, you will need something bigger anyway.

If you get a full size, get the diesel. Only way to go :-)

Likewise I've come to rely on Dan Stern's expertise. After I reached the
point of intolerance for the Hella H1 / H4 combo I ended up with a
slightly unconventional combo (my doing, not Dans) of the Cibie high
beam CSR with a Cibie H4 low/high beam with a convex lens. The Cibie, by
any measure of light control, is superior to the Hella. The Hella, by
any measure, is complete crap with light going every which way so
reflections from signs are just short of blinding. The Cibies punch
through to the next county without causing any unwanted glare.

As for the rock guard shells not fitting, get some of the Stongard
material - they often have specials on sheets.

The battery in my spare car is only giving 10.75 volts - i.e. dead cell. I
would prefer not to spend $100+ for a new series-49 battery. Is there any
way to fix this?

Thanks,
Bill

Check the water level and charge it up. If that doesn't work, there is no
good long term solution.

I would second that. The e36 M3 received many many accolades about its near
perfect steering.

I owned 2 95s and family has a 94 325i. The 325i is really good, but
nothing like the M3. It is as close to perfect precision as I have ever
experienced in the wide range of cars I have flogged. One of the draw
backs to modifying the suspension on a M3, it loses some of that perfect
feel. Makes driving a bone stock M3 a pleasant experience when I get
offered the chance.
Makes my 'new to me toy' 635CSi feel like a truck in comparison. I have
wondered exactly what it would take to drop in a M3 rack and pinion.

I too endorse Daniel Stern and these Cibie lights. I installed a
pair of low beams without relays & re-wiring and I'm pickled tink with
the results. The light is indeed very very evenly distributed.

Marc Plante asks about the E39 540.

I have a '00 540i/6 and it has been very reliable for the four years I
have owned it. I lost a cam position sensor and a throttle body, both
covered by warranty. I have been to four or five track schools per year
and six or so autox events per year during the four years, and it is
just fine. I don't baby it, but I don't beat on it either. IMHO, it is
the best all purpose car on the road. You will feel right at home
wearing a tuxedo for a night on the town (BTDT) and you will clean up
the lesser brethren on the track and the autox course (BTDT). It
requires a bit more skill and patience to really wring it out, but once
you add those skills to your bag-O-tricks, you'll be hard to beat. I
highly recommend a version with the sport package, and the six speed is
also a bonus. However, my wife's automatic has won a few drag races
with E36 M3s, with her driving of course :-), so even the automatic
isn't anywhere near slow.

Springsteen in one of his homecoming shows in NJ? How can you beat that?

He opened the show with CCR's "Who'll stop the rain?". Very apropos, as the
heavens had opened up shortly before the E Street band took the stage. The
few bursts of lightning served only to highlight the electricty of the
crowd. Not only was God on Bruce's side, so too were the airtraffic
controllers, as the low bass of overhead jets served to amplify Max and
Gary.

A nice mix of new and old songs, and the songs from "The Rising" had some
extra poignancy, given the proximity to New York City. The show lasted
nearly three hours.... this guy is nearly 54 years old, and he performs
nonstop for nearly three hours. Including a bit where he does a split on
his mike stand and hangs upside-down on it. Dang.

The rain cooled the crowd down a bit, and made Giants Stadium a wet t-shirt
party for 55k screaming fans. A night to remember.

Thanks to everyone who provided hints and suggestion for getting to the
Meadowlands and enjoying the show... We snuck in from the West, parked at
the stadium, and were doing 80 mph on the Garden State Pkwy just 20 minutes
after the last notes reverberated through the stands. Pretty sweet!
