I do not believe that SSR Comps are all that strong. strong perhaps for what they weigh (they are very light) but I don't think they are any stronger than other wheels of slightly higher weight. I would ensure that you're running the correct tire pressures or perhaps slightly higher, as this will tend to provide a bit of cushion for the wheels. for whatever reason you seem to hear more people who have bent wheel problems with the original '95 M3 235/40-17 fitment than with the later staggered 225/45 & 245/40 set-up, but I don't think the tires are that much thinner. maybe I'm just lucky, but I put 50k on my M coupe over the "roads" here in Detroit & never bent a wheel. I figured that the clutch would continue to degrade gradually until it slipped more than it gripped and I would finally become overwhelmed by the need to lay on my back under the car and benchpress the transmission to muscle fatigue. Whoops. Driving to lunch today I slowed to run over a sleeping policeman. When I hit it, a disheartening clank sounded from under my bottom followed shortly by a waft of hot clutch flavor and a sudden lack of forward locomotion. Dang. Not the graceful end to my clutch I was hoping for. And I just turned over 201,000 at the autocross last Sunday too. I guess that's not bad for the OE (I'm guessing) clutch. I waited until after traffic died down tonight then rounded up a buddy, a tow vehicle and a BMW tow eye and headed off to retrieve Ruby from her temporary resting place. Of course, waiting for traffic to subside also meant playing chicken with the sunset, meaning that it was very nearly dark when we arrived at Ruby's side. Flashlight? Nope didn't think of that. I expected to pop off the bumper trim, screw in the eye and drag her home. No such luck. First the trim wouldn't come off. Then when I finally persuaded it loose, there is no threaded socket behind it to accept the tow eye Frantically searching for somewhere to hook my tow strap I crawled all under the bumper and front valance only to turn up no good purchase. There was a hole behind the license plate where maybe one could put the tow eye but I didn't trust it to attach to just the bumper. Failing to come up with any good alternatives (towing it backwards briefly crossed our minds but we decided that wuld be just a little too exciting) I called around to folks I knew who had similar cars, only to find out that 84-87's aren't similar enough, that ETK wasn't helpful in this case and that everyone was pretty sure there had ought to be some way to hook up at the front of the car. I dropped my buddy off and went home to grab some dinner and reflect on my options. It was at this point that my wife introduced me to the best option of all, "Doesn't our insurance include roadside assistance?" Um, oh yeah. So a 5 minute phone call saved me 20% frustration or more. After the big truck dropped Ruby back off in the driveway, I took a flashlight out to figure out how to do this the right way, next time. Here's what I discovered: Brett Anderson and Ed McVaugh correctly suggested that there is a socket in the center of the bumper behind the license plate. I didn't want to tow from the bumper so I never tried to thread the tow eye into this hole. Turns out that was OK as the tow eye I grabbed from my '91 was too large to screw into it. Apparently they used a different sized shank on the '88 cars. Hmmm. There is no other place I could fit the (smallish) hook on my tow strap so in this case calling in reinforcements was my best option. Thanks to everyone for their good advice, now I have to figure out what clutch to put in this thing, and which lightened flywheel. Suggestions? I was lucky to pull it from the car before it locked me in permanently. So, I've only found the entire BMW kit as a replacement so far. At ~$400, I'm not so eager to do this dance again. I've found the Stellar product, BMW45P, touted as a 'plug n play' solution for the factory functionality, but only have old info about this company. If they haven't changed, then I wouldn't be eager to do business with them. What are the other options out there? I'm not looking for a bunch of fancy features, just the same functionality that the factory unit gave me. Alternatively, if anyone knows that the factory module can be repaired at a reasonable cost, I'd do that. FWIW, I took the case apart and inspected the components for obvious damage (blown caps, burnt plastic, etc). Nothing found. thanks again, Mike - --------------------------------------- Clan Hood-Douda - Arcadia Farm Lacomb, Oregon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 23:40:04 -0700 From: jkerouac <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [uuc] GOD, I love my wife RE: [uuc] GOD, I love my wife: If you wouldn't mind a somewhat unknown quantity, you could check out the link on the 'Unofficial BMW Website' link for "Renting a BMW in the SF Bay Area". With factory recommended pressures, as BMW lawyers dictate for reasons that have nothing to do performance, its a virtual guarantee you'll ding some rims no matter how careful you are. High frequency of dented rims contributed greatly to the factory's decision to switch from 195/60x14 to 195/65x14 on the E30 in '85, and again with 235/40x17 to 225/45+245/40 on the //M3 in 96. On the E36, I use factory rims with 235/40x17 front with 41-43 psi, and 245/40x17 rear with 36-38psi. Keeping any street tire on a BMW at or above 36psi will drastically reduce your chance of killing a rim.
