Huh? OK, somebody help me out with this one - the Irish in Canada don't
drink in the summer or what?

Anyone out there have an idea how heavy the steel(?) bumpers are on the 1988
325i cars? Front weight ? Rear weight?

How do the later plastic-over-fiberglass(?) bumpers compare in weight?

Since the bumper mounts and shock absorbers appear to be the same, don't
include those.

Thanks,

Stan

Subject: [uuc] E30 Brake Switch

I recently had my brake switch act up. This is the switch located on the
brake pedal. My brake lights quit, so I tried to check that switch. I
never got it removed, but just by playing with it the lights started working
again. Should I be changing the switch (imminent failure?) or was it more
likely just a bit loose/bad connection?

Thanks,

Stan

Believe the diving board bumpers are aluminum, not steel, but they're rather
thick and quite heavy.

I just did the conversion on my '90 325ic. Unfortunately, I did not weigh
either set during the swap and have already tossed the aluminum diving
boards.

Best guestimate based on handling these things a bit with my bare hands when
trying to perfect the install would be:

plastic: front (7 pounds); rear (10 pounds)
aluminum: 20-25 pounds each.

basic guess is the aluminum is 2-3x heavier.

significant enough to feel the difference when driving the car around the
first time.

not a definitive answer but hope this helps.

Dennis,

Thanks for the thorough update on the lease return issue. I think
much of what you found through BMW financial might be explained
through one of the BMW programs for dealers concerning used cars. My
personal knowledge of this program is from a couple of years ago, so
I encourage insiders with more up-to-date knowledge to correct any or
all of this.

BMW has a Full Circle program under which dealers sign-up (optional)
to accept 100% of their lease returns at average Black Book wholesale
value. That means the high mileage crap along with low mileage
cherries. Since your selling dealer knows what he's paying to get the
car back, he's more likely to offer a discount when you flip the car
into a CPO conversion. On nice cars this works out quite well for a
dealership but then BMW FS knows what the prevailing auction prices
are for their sales (higher results than Black Book which is the
average of all auctions, not just factory sales) and may well be
reluctant to drop their pants on the residual since they've been
spending big bucks for years to influence the price their returns
bring going over the blocks they control or dominate. This program
also explains why many of the better BMW lease returns never make to
into the hands of non-franchised BMW stores.

Bernie Ecclestone has denied axing next seasons Canadian Grand Prix,
stating that he has no idea where these claims have come from.

It was announced yesterday that the race organiser, Normand Legualt,
received a letter from Formula One Management informing them that their
grand prix had been wiped from the 2004 calendar due to tobacco advertising
laws, which come into play on October 1.

However, Ecclestone is denying the story, and is in fact adamant that the
calendar hasnt been finalised for the season ahead.

It's a work in progress.....judging by your response, you might have the
funding I'm looking for......it's only a cage & a few thousand dollars worth
of suspension away from a JS car...It would be better if you included a tow
vehicle as well.

With a fire suit, you can walk across the front straight.....really

Label? What's that? Especially in the case of the older Swede, there's not
any adhesive in the world that will stick to something that messy. Did I
mention that these are usually removed from the cars only via usage of a
considerable quantity of four-letter words. For the Duetsche car, I can
even berate it in it's native tongue. I'm a real neighbor pleaser.

Carlos, Carlos.....if you're going to relocate, you might as well improve
your cliamte as well......Some place like southern Cali, where you're also
more likely to find the benefactor listed above....

Yeah dump it off to me real cheap (the iS). It'll make a great rally car.

And I've recently had poor luck with Ken Baker Originals. They sold me a
poorly repainted replica M-Parallel wheel that was represented as a factory
original. When I pointed this out, they reluctantly took it back but I had
to pay for shipping both ways. Buyer beware!

Cheers,

David

I've had poor luck with Bavarian Auto Recycling. I made a purchase from
them 7-8 years ago and they did give me an excellent price. HOWEVER, it
literally took about two months to receive the parts! I suspect they sold
me a part they did not have in stock. Since then, I have called them a
number of times in recent years only to be quoted sky-high prices on used
parts. Try one of the several other dismantlers/yards listed in the Roundel
such as Ken Baker if you care about price.

I thought 4x100 Kosei K1's were ET 27. The extra 2 mm seemed to cause some
rubbing on a test mount on my car. I would like to learn otherwise, though.

No rubbing, no problems, beefy look, good performance.

Subject: RE: [uuc] Re: Somewhat enthusiastic 318I owner

Purchased this car 5 years ago on a lark. Just something that runs while I
keep all the kids cars going. It needed a lot of basic maintenance, like
replacement of noisy wheel bearings, bent wheels etc. which had the owner
thinking the car was worn out in general at 120,000 miles and thus a below
book price. Piece by piece I have gotten this car running pretty good and it
now has round wheels, new control arms, tie rod assemblies and good tires
(Michelin). It is smooth as silk on smooth road but the shocks are about
zero (178,000 miles). Engine is great, air works but drivers seat is a mess.
I am not a race driver or even a fan. But I like the handling of the car and
enjoy a good "go cart ride" and decent behavior on the dips in the road
especially in turns.

I can install Monroe sensa tracs for under $200 or Beilstein heavy duties
(no sports)for just under $600. This is not apples to apples. With the
sensatracs I would opt to keep the existing shock mounts (they look good)but
with the Beilsteins I'm thinking that the shock mounts had better be changed
because the Beilsteins will stress them more. I do not know enough to make a
case for any of this.

$400 is significant money for me but it can be found if there is some kind
of benefit I can substantiate. It would be great to ride on a set of each
but I do not hang around with the right people (although Huntsville, Al is
BMW territory) to have that kind of access. I am sure the Monroes will make
a wonderful difference right off the bat and if I never heard of Beilsteins
I would probably be happy but being an engineer and do it your selfoholic I
appreciate good stuff.

This is all subjective but perhaps someone who has sensatracs or who has
made the migration to bielsteins can comment. My wife drives this car a lot
and I do not want to ruin it for her by creating a jolt wagon.
