So I guess the link in my 92 535i is on borrowed time.
I'll have to pick one up next time I'm at the dealer,
and replace it before it leaves me without all those
functions. Assume it's the same for my car?

My 91 525i had this same malady 3 months ago. The
piece is identified in Bently's as the fusable
link. I called the local MB dealer to see if they
had one on a Sat that fit(they did), since the
nearest BMW dealer was 50+ miles away. They were
very nice about it and gave me the fuse. Im
wondering how many other 13 year old components will
be
showing their age soon?

The 80 amp inline fuse at the battery is bad.
It's cracked, won't look bad
until you undo the screws securing it, at which
point, it will fall into two
pieces.

It's in an inline holder, about 12 inches from
the positive terminal of the
battery, on the smaller of the two positive
cables.

The National Capital Chapter just held their annual HIghway Safety School at
Summit Point, WV this past Saturday. All other events that I know about
are of the "High Performance" variety. Are you a BMWCCA member? Check the
events calendar in the Roundel if so.

The CCA Foundation is offering courses around the country teaming up with
local chapters that are doing exactly what you are interested in. Check out
their website at www.streetsurvival.org. If you can make it to Minneapolis
in 8hrs ;^) we'll be putting on a Teen winter driving school in February.

Subject: [uuc] E30 M3 Suspension Advice Sought

I am installing a Dinan Stage 4 suspension on an E30 M3. I have never
modified a car in this manner before. I have strengthened the mounting
points on the front subframe for the sway bar mounts with steel to
double the thickness of the metal. I have welded on the doubling plates
to the rear trailing arms to strengthen those mounting points.

I am thinking of using the Jeff Ireland mounts for the rear bar (the
Dinan kit calls for stock mounts with Dinan rubber bushings). What does
the group think?

I don't like the idea of using the stock front mounts with their tongue
and single bolt design, preferring the two bolt design that uses a
subframe mounting bolt, like some aftermarket bars I have seen. Where
can I get these?

The Koni kit lowers the car substantially, and the Dinan kit has rear
camber plates to weld to the rear subframe, but I need to know if a
lowered car will require more adjusting of the trailing arm point
upward, or downward to keep camber at or near stock. I don't wish to
sacrifice tire life by going extreme on the camber.

I was considering installing rear toe adjustment so long as I have the
subframe at the weld shop. Which way does the toe change when you lower
the car?

as always, thanks,

Ed

Use a wire wheel or something similar to remove the powdercoating on the top
surface before you install them or you'll need to bang them into place with
a hammer.

Ask me how I know.

Subject: [uuc] '97 M3 AC problems

Are the air conditioning systems of the '97 M3 particularly prone to
leaks or failure of either the evaporator or the compressor?

The car in question is one I'm considering buying. The AC was evacuated
and recharged several days ago and now suffers from marginal air.

Have not driven the car long enough to assess if the cooling was
adequate immediately after the recharge and has degraded since - that
would indicate a leak. The owner claims no leak was found during the
evac and recharge - this makes me suspect the compressor. Car has 46K miles.

Thanks,

Peter du Bois

The X-brace adds noticeable stiffness to the car's front end. It's certainly
worth having, especially since the other mods you now list indicate you're
working the chassis harder than, say, the average clueless commuter.

However due to the model year of your car it may not have factory nutserts
into which the front X-brace bolts mount. This will complicate your
installation slightly. Here's one set of instructions:

Or got to:

and click on "How to install an x-brace" under Tech write-ups.

I have a good, but dirty, block from a 9/86 325eS. It is a bare block only.
Come get it in Cleveland Ohio and it's yours, free.

No takers in the next 48 hours and it gets scrapped.

Thanks

2000 was the first year the E39 M5 was offered in North America. It was
available in Yeeerrup as a 1999 model for a year prior to it's introduction
to NA.

As long as your friend doesn't have a cute daughter he doesn't mind grown
men learing at....

I assume this is what you mean by the Peachtree chapter's school. It
doesn't belong to BMWCCA, but seems to be staffed by quite a few local
members.....including many on this list--being an instructor doesn't require
a background check. ;)

On a serious note, Xtreme Measure is a great program, and one with which I'm
honored to be associated. The next school is in October.
