Subject: [uuc] E36 17" wheel options/weights?

Howdy,

I figure this is an old topic, so please feel free to point me in the
direction of a resource or whatever...

I need to get some 17x7.5 or 17x8 wheels for a '93 325is that I'm prepping
for STX autox...

I was wondering if there's a reference anywhere as to what the weights are
for common wheels like the '95 m3 17x7.5's (both oem and replica), the
later m3 front wheels (17x7.5 again I believe) etc.

I'm looking for a lightweight, cheap, and decent looking wheel that
doesn't require spacers (other than perhaps a hubcentric ring).

Class rules limit me to an 8" width. As I understand it, I'll want
something like a 40mm - 42mm offset to eliminate rubbing? I'll probably
run the 245/xx-17 Kumho MX's for tires...

Thanks! Sorry to bring up a topic that I'm sure gets raised all too
much... :-/

Group,

I brought my '99 M3 (the subject of the original post)
in to my local dealer to have the rough cold idle
looked at, and apparently there was a TSB on this
issue, requiring a software update. The dealer kept
the car overnight to have another cold start
opportunity and called me this morning to tell me it's
smooth as glass now. If it's otherwise when I pick it
up, I'll let you all know - as I will the dealer...

HTH,

Neil

They're not exactly light, and appearance is a matter of opinion, but I have
4 early E36 M3 wheels for $75 each. That fits the cheap part of your
requirements, no? They're 17x7.5. Two are black, two are silver, none are
in good cosmetic condition but I think they're all straight.

the best reference for stock wheel weights is the ETK, tho it is possible
that the real-world weights could be slightly different.

generically speaking factory 17" x 7.5" BMW wheels are going
to be in the 19.5-22 pound range. aftermarket wheels are almost
always going to be heavier than stock, especially in the replica
styles. the forged E36 M3 wheels are not much lighter or heavier
than the cast ones, but they're stronger being of a forged construction.

lightweight & cheap are usually mutually exclusive. appearance is
completely subjective & may or may not be related to cost.

SSR Comps are among the lightest wheels you can buy - sub
15 lb IIRC - but they're pricey. BBS RC's are my favorite
and they come in a 17" x 8" w/38mm offset fitment which is
just about perfect for E36'es AFAIK.

as you probably know, the Tire Rack has a huge selection of wheels
but they don't publish weights on their web site (but they do in their
ads in the Roundel & GRM sometimes) but they may be able to
provide them.

Ben
lots of wheels, almost none of them for E36'es...

Although its not on their website, I believe that Evosport,
www.evosport.com, just ordered a special run of 17"x8" Kosei K1s for
the E36 M3. They should weigh in somewhere between the SSR Comps and
the lightest stock BMW wheel.

Stock 1995 M3 Wheels are about 21 pounds
Stock 1996+ M3 front wheels are about 22 pounds

OZ Superleggera 17x8 17.6 pounds $280 Tire Rack
BBS RK's 17x8 16.5 pounds $288 Tire Rack
SSR Comps 17x8 14.5 pounds $379 Tire Rack

Josh Sirota and I use the OZ Superleggera on his E46 M3 in stock sizes and
the seem like a light wheel that was relatively inexpensive, at least for
BMW wheels.

Too bad you can't use a 17x8.5 wheel, because the Kosei K1 meets all your
requirements except for size.

<http://www.rogueengineering.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RE&Category_Code=SPEC>

I believe the Kosei K1 at one time may have been made in 17x8 size, but I
am not 100% certain. You might try to find some used ones.

There is a company called Rim Stock in the UK that makes a pretty light
wheel that is inexpensive. A buddy of mine got his 15x7 wheels, that weigh
13.5 pounds, at $120 per wheel from them. The are the Pro Race 1
model. They might be able to custom machine a set of their 17x8 Pro Race 1
model for your BMW.

         <http://www.rimstock.com>

Good luck with your STX project.

TireRack has Kosei K1s for $199 these days. They're about 17lbs or so.

Interesting and elegant.
I wonder what the fluid is and what loss occurs at the interface of the toroids?

Dear digest,

I wonder whether one (or some, or all) of you would be kind enough to
forward me a copy of Digest #6658. I deleted it by mistake, the archives
are a bit up and down at the moment, and I think there was some interesting
stuff in there about strut braces and such.

Thanks

Yeah, I really liked the BBS RK 17x8 that Tirerack lists at 16.5 lbs...
Unfortuantely I'm not as hot on the $288/ea price... :-/ I was hoping to
keep the cost somewhere around the $500 mark...

The Wheel Exchange lists some M-Kontour replicas at 17x8, 40mm offset, and
the guy on the phone says 22 lbs. $680 delivered. I'm also looking at
some 17x7.5 OEM '95 M3 rims for closer to $500, but of course those are
used (I'm not horrifically anal about wheel condition, but these will be
street wheels as well so bad scrapes / discolorations are out, as is
anything bent).

I was kinda hoping there was a default "Everyone just buys these!" set of
rims out there... :-)
