I think I read Will Turner bent some 40+ SSR Comps on his race cars. I
don't
think I'd ever buy any SSR wheels myself.

Subject: [uuc] Brake system help wanted

First off, sorry for the cross posting, but I am having trouble with the
brake system on my 1992 325is race car (102K miles) and I am running out of
solutions.

After reading the Bently manual's brake system troubleshooting section ,
everything lead to the master cylinder being the problem.
Well, I changed the master cylinder tonight and I still have the same symptoms.

The symptoms are:
Car off, pump pedal 3 times and it gets hard (starts mushy and gets harder
after each pump)
Hold pressure after pumping pedal and start car, pedal drops about 3/4 of
its total travel length
Car running, pedal has excessive travel (about 3/4 travel before there is
resistance) and is mushy
Shut off car, pump pedal three times and it is rock hard.
I am not losing any fluid at all.

Some background:
Ran it at Summit a few weeks ago and the ABS worked great/tires locked up
easily and controllably, just that the pedal was lower than I remember
and very mushy. I have tried pressure bleeding the system and manually
bleeding the system (ran about 2 quarts of fluid through)
When you are idling around in the pits the pedal is very soft/mushy (even
after bleading them which produces no air bubbles) and about 1/2 way down
to get the car to stop with no excessive pedal pressure.
The pedal does not "leak-down" if you keep a hard constant pressure on the
pedal. Another words, it does not
start in the middle and end up on the floor if you keep a constant hard
pressure on the pedal.

What else could it be?

I was planning on replacing the one-way valve and the hose leading to the
intake next?
I have checked the connections and there are no leaks. Anyone know how or
if it is possible to test the valve?
The only other part after that is the brake booster itself. Is there a way
to test it first?

I appreciate the help or suggestions,

Chris

What happened to cause this problem? Was the system worked on? You have
classic symptoms of air in the lines. Bleed while running the ABS pump.

Maybe us single guys (or gals) can use this forum to find that perfect mate!
The ad would read something like:

BMW's,drivers schools,working on BMW's,reading BMW magazines,surfing BMW

Nothing has happened immediately...the pedal has been getting
softer/mushier over the last 3-4 track days.

Haven't done anything to the system recently, except for changing the pads
and rotors (calipers retracted easily, nothing sticking)
and bled the clutch slave cylinder before the last track day.

I got the ABS to activate several times at my second to last track session
and then bled the brakes (no air) and went out in my last session
with the same issues.

It was mushy enough that they had second thoughts about letting me pass
tech inspection at my last school.

Is there a way to activate the ABS manually? without the MODIC?

I totally agree with the classic symptoms of air in the lines, but I have
run over a quart of fluid through the system with no air bubbles?

Thanks,

Chris

I've never done it myself but I believe that jumpering a relay will do it.
I don't know if the MoDiC does more than that, say open the valves to a
particular setting while the motor runs.

Donna,

I'm Dennis's long lost and significantly less successful brother....I come
with an already track-prepped M3 that only requires funding, as well as an
unlimited supply of free tickets to IMSA races. Semi-housebroken, although
I have been known to leave oily tools & parts in my wake.

The only downsides are the baggage....I also come with 2 Swedish
cars....That & I'll drink all your beer.....

;-)
