I had our second car's (87 MB 190e) AC system evacuated and recharged with R134 for ~$200 (don't have the bill handy, but that's ballpark). The "conversion" is just removing the R12, adding some adapter fittings to the fill and vent ports, and refilling w/ R134 and a lubricant. My shop said they've had good results running R134 through MB compressors designed for R12. The system certainly runs cold. - --SC [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: >"Zidlicky, Peter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >>conversion to 134a will run you $1k without the cost of the compressor. >> >> > >That is grossly excessive. > ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2003 14:05:13 -0700 From: "T WALROD" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [uuc] Air condition: NFG "Zidlicky, Peter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > you can probably find a used compressor for less than $200 ... > beats the alternative of paying over $1k for a new one. A trusted mech with better eyes than I spots the cause of non-clicking compressor clutch as . . . Bad clutch! Pressure of the system is good. ETK shows the compressor as coming with clutch only, so (being thrifty) I'm hunting a Nippondenso compressor clutch for an early 1989 325i. I will check the 325i's clutch against a 533i parts car's clutch when the car comes home, but don't have great hopes for a match. Anyone got a dead compressor of that ilk they feel like selling me the clutch from? That would be about right. I can buy a 1998 328i, 1998 528i or 1998 728i, all with history, spec and short legs, for about 10,000 apiece. In fact a good 1998 Z3 2.8 is also about 10,000, come to think of it. So is a first-class 2800CS... Andy T ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2003 15:31:39 -0700 From: "Paul M. Problems: 1. Leaky. Probably an output shaft seal. I assume these seals are easy to replace? 2. Too much force is required to rotate the input shaft. The area is a bit rusty so it may just need a good cleaning or perhaps a new input shaft bearing? How easy are these bearings to replace for a reasonably experienced DIY'er? 3. Too much force is required to rotate the output flanges in opposite directions. I can rotate them by hand but just barely. I have another rear iX differential to compare it to and it requires much less force. I guess it could be the other diff that has the problem. Is there an easy way to bench test these lockup rates? And assuming I can determine which one is bad, is there anything internal I can fix? Given that it has been leaking, perhaps low fluid level could explain the symptom? I'm in California so we don't have that much rain over here and the car is a daily driver with no track time intended. So what you all think??? Manuel Paredes 95 325i Getting a new suspension!! L.A.
