The problem in the past has been that the design requires too tight tolerances, resulting in issues with temperature variation. I don't know if this has been overcome or is a problem with this particular design. Personally, I believe automated manuals will be the future. There are several designs out there with promise. Just get a set of take off 10 spoke OEM wheels from M3s. The '95 wheels tend to be sighly lighter but weaker against potholes. '96 and later front wheel are good choice too since they will handle abuse better. And best of all there is tons of then out ther selling for cheap so you can find replacement easily if you bend one. I purchased it at 18,000 miles in 2000 and have garaged it since. It was driven as a daily driver for 2 years and since I've moved to Wisconsin I've only been driving it for pleasure. The roads just aren't that great here (too straight), and I only drive it when going somewhere curvy. To my knowledge no one has ever smoked in this car. I can't vouch for what happened before 18,000 miles, but it did not smell like anyone had smoked in it, and I'm very sensitive to smoke. My wife is allergic to it and has never had a problem in this car. I recently removed the harnesses/harness bar mounting plates and vacuumed thoroughly all carpeting. Additionally, I checked the tread depths on all tires and found them to be 9/32 all the way around the car. I have taken the car to four Tarheel BMW CCA driver's events, always on street tires, separate brake pads, and separate rotors. Pictures and VIN available on request. Serious inquiries only, please. OK guys, let's get something straight here. To everyone that asks a question: Many people usually have suggestions for you, not just the pro's like myself and Kirk, but well versed amateurs who continue to teach me a thing or two. How about some common decency, courtesy if you wish, in telling the list what the problem turned out to be. This is not just to gratify the person who came up with the fix, if someone did, but it's to add to the knowledge database if the problem comes up again on someone else's car. Thanks for your consideration, on this hot and dark night. Hey, a new message tag. Brett's right, though I usually try to provide some sort of post mortem, I failed on my last inquiry and it wasn't quite a common knowledge thing: Suspension clunk in E36. some say sway bar bushings, some say ball joints. I've had bad experiences in the past with top strut mounts on VW Rabbits (don't use stock cap bearings if you put bilsteins in them). Picked up the car and wiggled the wheel. Things seemed firm enough. Sway bar links looked cracked (and had 215k miles on them) so I figured I'd start there (since they're easy)...No luck Took the car to a shop, where mechanic picked up car worked wheel, put large slip joint pliers on inner and outer ball joints. Nothing that looked too bad...Road test...only on slow right hand corners...clunk!...BACK on lift...well, there is a *little* bit of play in both inner and outer ball joints. Also, the fact that the younger of the set is 120k miles old should have been a tip I should just do them. Didn't seem like a lot of play, but we agreed to put on control arms cause the car had earned them. Problem solved...moral: remember that your car is generating loads that you can't simulate effectively with your bare hands. Some times you need to work with mileage rules of thumb when assessing component health. So I wonder when my 215k front wheel bearings with 70 track days and about as many autoX days are going to go. Marc, thanks for the post-mortem. I have one question for you: If your wheel bearings have 215k on them and you do so many track days, AND you had it up on the lift twice and were already doing suspension work, WHY didn't you just do them as preventative maintenance??!? Having lost enough track time in my short racing/driving career due to parts unexpectedly failing, I've learned to just suck up the cost and go for the preventative fix, rather than miss a session, day or race once I'm actually at the track. YMMV of course but I would definitely recommend doing them immediately in a car of that age and that you obviously like to track...
