E36 M3:
95 5spd, 3.15
95 Auto, 3.23

96-99 5spd, 3.23
96-98 auto, 3.38

E36 325i is the only E36 with a lower ratio, that'd be 3.91 for the auto,
while the 5spd got stuck with a 3.15.

So, in short, the only diff option that is a direct bolt in, is the 3.91
from an E36 325 Automatic.

The housing was not used in any other BMW model, so if you want any other
ratio, such as 3.46, 3.64, 3.73, 4.10 or 4.27, it has to be custom built for
you.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [uuc] Tire advice 95 M3 with BBS RX 18 x 8 38mm offset

I need to replace the 235-35-18 Michelin Pilots on my otherwise unmodified
95 M3. The 35 series profile is proving problematic with anything other
than smooth, pothole free roads so I want to move up to 40 series tires.
Tire Rack lists a fitment of 225-40-18, but on a stock suspension car (with
no mods planned), has anyone fitted 235-40-18 tires with no clearance
problems? I'm very much aware that my ride height and rolling circumference
with change and therefore the speedo reading too, but I willing to adapt to
that. I just hate to put tires with a more narrow cross section than the
235's I now have. But if I have to go with 225's, then so be it or I'll
consider remounting the original M contours with the 235-40-17's.

Replies offline are fine to avoid starting another tire thread.

The one thing I don't like about the Coupe are the stock wheels. Are the
E36 M3's interchangeable, same offsets, clearance etc?

absolutely not.

the rear wheels are a unique size - 17" x 9" w/only 8mm of offset, which
is wider than most E36 wheels and with 30-35mm less offset than
E36's use.

you want a wide rear wheel on the M coupe or it looks silly, so you're
either looking at stock wheels or using something from another BMW with
similar offsets.

you can _reduce_ offset to wheels by using spacers, but cannot _add_
it, so you could run a 9" wheel which is designed for an E36, but
you'd have to spend ~$200 on 25mm spacers (with their added shorty
lug bolts which hold the spacers on, then use normal lugs to hold the
wheel to the spacers. and you'd still not have as much track width as you'd
want to have. another alternative are wheels from an E34 or E31. the
E34 turbine/throwing star wheels came in a 17" x 9" w/22mm offset,
which would be perfect with 15mm spacers. the E31 version of the
same wheel is 19mm offset, so you could get by with a 10mm spacers.
however, making the front 17" x 8" 20mm offset wheels fit would not
be easy or perhaps even possible.

the fronts are identical to E36 wheels, being 17" x 7.5" w/41mm offset.

the resources that cited previously have lots of people with lots of
different wheel solutions, check 'em out. the roadfly board is pretty
polite to newbies in my experience, so give that a try.

Dave,

I'm definitely interested. My sunroof on my 92 325i had to be repaired
a couple of years ago and I took it to the dealer. Since I coordinated
it with a hailstorm paintless dent repair it wasn't as painful as the
original dealer quote ($1200!!!). I paid for a new sunroof cassette
minus BMWCCA discount (still cost $400!!) and about an hour of labor for
the dealer. Insurance paid for the dent guy to take out the headliner
and reinstall that and paid more for the dent repair than I had to pay,
but still was about $600 out of pocket IIRC.

Let's hear the procedure....I'd like to have it for future reference in
case this ever happens again and there's no hailstorms around :-)

Thanks,

Phil

Group

I have two BBS RKs 15x7 for E36. They were part of a trade a while back.
They were in use for autox with 225/50 toyos. Now that I am going to drivers
schools I wanted to complete the set for track tires. Low and behold they
are discontinued in that size. I would like to buy two more in any condition
cosmetically as long as they are round or sell these two to someone and buy
a set of something else. The two I have are round and are in great shape.
They look fine for regular use if you have some others to go with them. They
have some small nicks but no major rash. Since they are NLA I would think
they are worth $150 each. But I could be wrong:). I am accepting offers on
these or if you have two or four that you are willing to sell, cosmetics not
an issue, let me know. TIA

Subject: [uuc] Garage cleaning FS: New BMW European Fire Extinguishers and First Aid
Kits

Hi Gang,

Well its time for a late summer garage cleaning. Over the course of this
summer I ended up with too many BMW European Fire Extinguishers and First
Aid Kits. These are brand new items, still boxed. There is no way to buy
them from BMW in the US or Canada. I will sell these for under my cost. $100
and that includes ground fedex and E46 mounting brackets. I have one
mounting bracket for any E39 or an E34 with sport seats (M5 seats or the
540i with sport package), that goes for $30. These prices are for the fire
extinguishers.

The E39/E34 first aid kits are $75 and can be had in black, grey or sand,
price includes mounting bracket and shipping. For E34 owners the same
appication/fit applies as for the fire extinguisher.

Evan [EMAIL PROTECTED] asks:

"Someone ask me the other day what differentials would work on a '99 M3. I'm
not even sure what the stock one is much less what's available or
compatible. What ratios and what cars would he look to for a compatible
lower geared diff? He ask if there was a 3.73 available, is there and what
car(s) would be a donor? If not a 3.73 how close to that and what would the
cost for a low mileage good diff be?"

Malaysian-market E36 328s had a 3.91 final drive; if there's a part number,
there's a chance you can get your hands on it. There are plenty of 3.45s
and 3.46s around. 3.73 appears in some 4-pot E46s; don't know if they'll
fit (or if they do, whether they're up to the job in an M3).

Stock 95 M3 is 3.15:1
Stock 96+ M3 is 3.23:1 for manual transmission.
Heck if I recall what the autobox had.

So you're basically asking if the jack points are there for the purpose of

Umm, yes.

Subject: [uuc] Diff Side Seal Replacement

Groups, I'm trying to change the side seals on a used 3.91:1 LSD I bought
for my E30 325i. This diff is out of the car. I'm looking for any trick
manuvers or nifty tools that would expedite the removal of the old seals.
The Bentley manual says you can pry them out with a screwdriver (and be
careful not to mar the surface to which the seal press-fits). So far that
has not been successful. It looks like penetrating oil might help, but I
don't want any of that stuff getting inside the diff.

All suggestions welcome. Bonus points for pics or write-ups on techniques
that work.

Subject: RE: [uuc] Diff Side Seal Replacement

As the diff is out of the car, the easy way to remove the seals is to remove
the seal carriers.

Do one side at a time, otherwise you'll have trouble aligning the
differential cluster when reinstalling the seal carriers.

Remove the 6 bolts securing the carrier to the differential housing. Rotate
and pull to remove it, it might take some effort.

Knock the seal out from the back side, install the new seal, replace the O
ring PN 33 11 1 214 144, lube the O ring, install the carrier by rotating as
you push.

There is a tab on the top of the carrier, this tab MUST be located at the
top when you're done or you'll starve the side bearing of oil.

The two rear most bolts that secure the carrier penetrate the case, so they
need to have a sealant put on the threads. Loctite 640 or similar, or RTV
in a pinch, will take care of that.

Have fun.
