I have a potential buyer for my M3/4 wondering if there is a good
independent mechanic for BMW service in the
Annapolis/Arnold/Severna Park, MD area. Any listers know of one?

Thanks!

Brett, when I saw the design, I wondered why the procedure didn't call for
unbolting the carrier. It looked logical, but I didn't want to do it if it
was not recommended. I'll give it a try next time I have time to get dirty.

Thanks,

Subject: RE: [uuc] Re: Central Locking Question

I hesitated to bring up the dealer part too, as I didn't want my first
post to stir up problems and/or be whiney. I was in shock when I was
quoted $179, and when I pressed him on it, his response was "well, the
tech has to take the wheel off". :( He also quoted something like $485
for replacing the lower control arm bushings. When I asked him whether
he was sure those weren't warranty items, he came back and said yes. It
sounds like these are fairly commonly replaced items on E46s, but is it
questionable whether they're warranty or customer pay items?

FWIW, I thought the really sad thing was that immediately after dropping
my car off, I rode next door with my business partner to the Infiniti
dealership to drop off his G35 for a recall. His was a completely
different (and better) experience compared with the attitude I got at
the BMW dealer.

I hesitate even further to ask what I'm sure is a FAQ, but does anyone
have a dealer recommendation in Atlanta, as well as recommendations for
independent shops. There are 4 dealers in metro Atlanta, so I'm hoping
that someone has some positive experience with at least one of them. I
live in midtown, so for the independent ships, in town would be best.

BTW, this seems like a fantastic list/group, especially compared to the
high number of sites full of talk about spinny wheels and
glow-in-the-dark windshield washer nozzles.

Also, any advice on the mysterious central locking amplifier would still
be appreciated too. Even advice on where to look for the thing or a
part number.

Thanks again,

I really don't want to start another "stealer" thread - especially
because
my local dealer has a very good service department, not that I use it a
lot
- - but it's sure hard to let this one pass by without comment.

As you know, it's hard to imagine replacement of a brake wear sensor
taking
any more than 30 minutes, including a leisurely coffee and smoke break.

You should fire this dealer, and make sure they know exactly why.

I am assuming you are concerned about usint the round
cup of a floor jack in the square jack points. I have
had no problems using those points with a non-BMW
floor jack, although the best path might be to create
a piece out of wood block that would fit between the
square point and the round jack cradle. I have not
tried this so I can't really guarantee that is would
be stable enough.

Where did you go, Chris? That's the only one I can think of with an
Infiniti dealer nearby. The dealers in Atlanta suck. If your car is out of
warranty forget them--actually Hank Aaron is ok, but who wants to go all the
way down there.

IMHO, the best indy shop in Atlanta (there's a good one in Suwanee, but who
wants to go up there either) is Bowman Motor Works. Near the Brookhaven
Marta station, about 5 minutes up Peachtree from Lenox. Phil's a really
good guy who doesn't BS. Everyone I've sent there has been happy. He'll
beat the hell out of dealer pricing as well. I try to do all the work on my
car myself (or with the help of friends), but if I were to get in over my
head, I would go to Bowman--or ship it to Don F. or Brett A.......

Infiniti is very well known for their excellent dealer service, which is
supposed to be the best in the industry. I had one before & recommended one
to a g.f. once. They are off the charts.
