Yeah, I was at Chris. There was still a couple of months left on the
warranty or I wouldn't have bothered at all. Thanks for Bowman
suggestion though.

Currently, my ability to do many things myself is limited by my condo
parking-lot/no-garage situation, so lugging tools, jack stands, etc. out
to a parking lot is a chore. I can do minor stuff like oil changes and
brakes, but don't really want to tackle jobs bigger than that until I
get something with a garage and a driveway of my own to spill stuff
fluids in without being accosted by the neighbors.

Where did you go, Chris? That's the only one I can think of with an
Infiniti dealer nearby. The dealers in Atlanta suck. If your car is
out of
warranty forget them--actually Hank Aaron is ok, but who wants to go all
the
way down there.

IMHO, the best indy shop in Atlanta (there's a good one in Suwanee, but
who
wants to go up there either) is Bowman Motor Works. Near the Brookhaven
Marta station, about 5 minutes up Peachtree from Lenox. Phil's a really
good guy who doesn't BS. Everyone I've sent there has been happy.
He'll
beat the hell out of dealer pricing as well. I try to do all the work
on my
car myself (or with the help of friends), but if I were to get in over
my
head, I would go to Bowman--or ship it to Don F. or Brett A.......

Infiniti is very well known for their excellent dealer service, which is
supposed to be the best in the industry. I had one before & recommended
one
to a g.f. once. They are off the charts.

We've just moved to town and are looking for a reliable honest
independent shop for general maintenance on the wife's 1995
Infiniti I30. Any suggestions? North Reading is about 15 miles
due north of Boston, MA.

Yea, I know your pain. I'm one of those tennants who's really a neighbor
pleaser. Left my old POS (even REALLY looks like a POS) Saab on jackstands
outside for, like 4 days, with the passenger side front wheel off. Of
course, it wasn't my fault--it didn't run. I've only been in my new
apartment for 4 weeks & my garage floor is pretty stained.

I'm getting ready to go back to Ohio for some work, but if you need to do
some work, drop me a line. If I'm in town you can use my garage--it's
pretty big & I have a decent set of tools. I'm in Dunwoody. Additionally,
there's a Taco Mac across the street, so good beer & hot wings are in
sufficient supply......

Thanks, Mike, Marco, and Scott. The GGC program sounds/looks just right.
But it appears that GGC requires BMW CCA membership. And you must have a
BMW to participate (unless your Bimmer is in the shop). Unfortunately, she
fails on both accounts. I could *try* to convince my friend to become a
member, but buy a new car, not likely. Many people have an automatic
aversion to becoming a member in order to take part in an activity. Given
that neither of them owns a BMW, convincing him to become a CCA member is
not a slamdunk.

If that is the only option, I'll suggest it to him. But I HAVE to believe
there are other similar courses available out there. Perhaps there is a
website that lists various courses in Calif. or nationally? An Acura group?

A regular Skip Barber, Bondurant, etc. school is probably more than he is
looking for. However, I'll mention the Russell at Sears Point and Barber at
Laguna Seca schools as options to explore. It sounds like they may have
something that is a step or two below their regular courses. Anybody have a
website specific to those locations for either? Or should I just find the
main website for each organzation?

BTW Mike, I am a "right" coaster. My good friend relocated the "left" coast
after grad school. I'm a staunch "right" coaster, though I have no doubt
that other coast is wonderful too.

To which the appropriate response would be, "What, do you take your
customers for, complete freakin' morons?? Oh wait a minute, you've already
made that abundantly clear."

History shows that when people complain to BMW about this sort of treatment
at dealers, they either get no response or are told that dealers are
independent businesses over whom BMW has no control.

This is true right up to the last point. In fact the manufacturer sets the
standard for its dealers, and enforces them. Or at least it can if it
chooses to do so.

It's no accident that people report such good experiences at Infiniti or
Lexus dealers, or such mixed results at BMW dealers.

Stan,
Membership in BMW CCA can be most enjoyable for any gearhead regardless
of what he/she drives. The Roundel (club magazine) is one of the finest
automotive pubs available and is often quoted in commercial car mags.
I'm not sure if it still holds true but Skip Barber used to offer a
course that should be geared in the direction that you want to go. Many CCA
chapters open their schools to other brands and non memberson a space
available basis.
Good luck finding the right school. It is, in my opinion a good move to
take such a course.
             Best,
                 Ben White/Ocean Springs, MS
