Dennis,
You are right.
I would discount the price of a damaged car, proportional to the amount of
damage and the risk I would be assuming that it was not repaired properly
(hard to judge after the fact).

Neil either has unique tastes or touts his company's party line.

In the past I had purchased one E30 that had been rear-ended and had it's
trunk lid and rear panel replaced. And one E36 with a replaced right front
fender from and mirror from a superficial encounter with DFW traffic. Paid
about 10% off NADA's wholesale for E30 and exactly NADA wholesale for the
E36.

Subject: [uuc] BMW Struts - Annoying Trend?

I've recently changed out suspensions on both a Cooper S and an E46 330i
(not my own cars). Unlike my E36 M3, both of these use a round strut bottom
which spigots into the kingpin and is clamped with a single pinch bolt.
(I've never worked on an E30, but they appear to use a similar arrangement.)

In both cases the strut is too long (or the control arm droop is too little)
for the strut to be withdrawn fully from the kingpin. It seems you either
have to:
1) Pop a ball joint, something I didn't want to do, to drop the control arm
more, or
2) Apply spring compressors while the strut still on the car until it's
compressed enough to clear the wheel arch. This is a major PITA since
there's not much working room inside the wheel well.

Am I missing something here, or is BMW just bent on making everyone else's
life difficult?

By contrast, I installed coilovers on an E46 330i PP, and the strut there
was just short enough to come out directly. Very quick and clean. Haven't
tried an E46 M3.

On the plus side, at the rear the E46 either has shorter springs or more
suspension droop, so the springs come out easily.

Any racers got the stock wiring harness from their drivers door?

Must be unmolested and have a good, clean, A pillar connector. Will pay
extra if you have the car harness side of the connector, and about 12" of
wire, available.

Donor car needs to have central lock, power windows, door lock heater and
interior light delay.

Need it ASAP, will have you ship overnight on my UPS account.

Thanks

I am still parting out 1985 535i 5-speed white
exterior, beige interior. It has 160k miles. This car
was well taken care of until it was broad sided on the
passenger side. Car drove straight. Interior, trunk,
and engine compartment are in great shape. All seats
are in the excellent condition. Leather is soft and
has no crakes, holes or rips. Front seats are standard
(non-sport), manual (lighter then electric and easier
to fix in the future). Dash has a crack. Wheels are
metric come and get them if you want. All body parts
are in very good condition except for passenger side.
Pictures are available upon request. I am parting this
car now, so contact me with your requests.
Transmission, drive shaft, differential, radiator,
ICV, AC compressor and condenser as well as other
small parts are gone. Prices are negotiable. Delivery
within 100 miles from San Francisco can be arranged. I
would prefer sell large parts locally. However I will
ship if needed. Please contact me at:

Thanks. Sasha.

I just recently purchased a 2000 528iA (E39). I have the "Vehicle History
Report" that lists the repair history; however, it only lists a "Defect
Code". How do I convert the code to a service? For example, 6313051200?

Thanks in advance.

I have an 88 735i..Love it..

a true maintenance hog if I've ever seen one.. I have 250 k miles on
mine. It costs me about $100-150.month in parts on average, and I don't
pay labor..so if parts and labor are equal, which they seem to frequently
be, you need $3600/year to keep this beast in good shape, and a good shop
nearby!

The HVAC system is a weak point, the resistor "sword" has failed for the
third time, Three water solenoids and a manual valve fixed it.. the
headlight and wiper modules have been replaced, suspension arms and ball
joints three times, Steering tie rods and center link(twice) subframe
bushings, driveshaft , alternator..rebuilt once, replaced once, head gasket
replaced, brake bomb, Brakes, shocks, A/C system(three condensers), r 134
conversion, gas tank, heater core, radiator, water pumps, instrument mother
board, Three Aux fans for the A/C.. the list goes on..

Most of these repairs have happened consistently since the car had about
100 k miles on it..I would expect to fix a car as old as mine a bunch, but
the repairs started around 70k...That 150/ month number is real for parts.

Are you getting the idea? I'm sure a 105 k mile 735i is beautiful, but it
is also about ready to cough up most of the items I just mentioned... It is
a 15 year old luxury car, with a new price tag of 80 k, and guess what, it
is going to be very similar in costs to fix to a new 740i!

The early e32s frighten the mechanics, especially the 750's but the 735s
had all the same problems except the engine/tranny.

If I were getting 735i again, it would be a 92, if I were getting a 7
series and wanted the most reliable one, I'd get a post 96 740i..

If I just wanted a bimmer but not a 3, I'd probably go for a 525 0r 535
from the early 90's

This all said, I sure love/hate my 735i.. fast smooth , good in the
snow..super comfortable for my 6'4 245lb body..And I just shot it British
Racing Green and did all the body work..looks real straight right now!..too
bad its in the garage awaiting a heater sword..

My tach is dim behind the 4.
Taking out the cluster I only saw the warning indicator bulbs, turn
signal, odo and maybe 3 that I assume are the back light bulbs. Are
there more bulbs that I'm not seeing from the rear?

You have to use a spring compressor on the E46 M3 to remove the strut from
kingpin, there isn't enough droop with the factory control arm. We did
this swap six months ago on my co-driver's E46 M3 from the factory
struts/shocks to Koni's.

FWIW, the tach on our '95 is dimmer in the same spot. IIRC it's been that
way since February 19, 1995 (Date of Acquisition).

Did you open the cluster to see the bulbs inside? or only the ones
accessible without opening?

Did you know you can burn outboard motor 50:1gas/oil premix gas in a 93
Suburban, when your wife runs her "why is the truck stopping?" dry.....
Doesn't even smoke...much.

Did you know that the boat's bailer(windshield washer fluid bottle with the
bottom cut out and the cap on) makes a bitchin' fuel funnel, especially if
you jam a long screwdriver down thru the neck to hold the fuel flap open?

Did you know that while standing on the side of the interstate with the
traffic whizzing by your a**, that you can actually fuel from an outboard
motor gas tank, almost as fast a Nascar pit crew ..

Did you ever wonder why Bimmers (OBMWC)had THEIR fuel fills on the
passenger side..which , until yesterday, seemed inconvienient...

I didn't either.. till last night.

Now I do.
