The appeasement of the Chinese (tolerance of their refusal to allow
their currency to float) is simply recognition that it is cheaper than
the inevitable conflict if the billion and a half don't see their
situation improve.

Think $87 billion in Iraq is serious money.

 I have a 95 M3 5spd, with a 3.15 LSD. I want a 3.38 LSD, 3.46 LSD, or
quaife. Got one? Anyone need a 3.15 LSD?

Would AAA know to look for E36-specific problems? Rear suspension weak
points, plastic water pump impeller and thermostat cover, even I know
about that stuff and I've never wrenched on one. I doubt Pep Boyzz or
AAA would do more than measure tread depth and verify the coolant level,
then mention that the carpet is a little worn beneath the driver's right
heel.

Even if she's not going to use a BMW-knowledgeable mechanic after she
owns the car, the time to get a solid handle on the car's problems is
before the purchase.

I agree with Ed MacVaugh: She would be better off driving an Acura.
That's not an elitist snob attitude, it's fiscal reality for someone who
wants to treat a car as an appliance.

$150 is what a real BMW mechanic charged me to inspect my 328i. Of
course that's a Texas price, not a Cali one.

Both will travel to the car to inspect it. They will not DRIVE it
and I don't think you will get a compression or leak-down test. For what
you pay, these are OK. These are the kind of inspections that lease
banks
use before allowing a used car lease. A good deal if you are buying a
car sight unseen.

$100-150, I think.

PepBoys also does pre-purchase inspections, but YMMV with those and
the car has to be driven in. I don't know what it costs and what they
will do.

As was noted, if she does not want to pay what a BMW mechanic wants to
an inspection, she is going to be REAL SAD when she has a problem and
has to pay for repairs.

My 325e's steering fluid is disappearing. I have found no noticeable
leaks, drips, or dark spots on my driveway. Any ideas?

Hello,

Yes I am back, just not to stir things up this time -- promise. I
apologise for helping to ignite this firestorm of a thread and I want
everyone to know that I'm better now ;-).

For the record, I am not a communist, just a frustrated business owner
having to adapt to changing competition. One of the really fantastic
things about the US is the freedom to spew forth volumes of opinion when
the need arises. Sorry it was OT for this forum.

Of course I realise that competition in all aspects of life is just part
of life and in the end Natural Selection rules supreme (this is not a
religious comment, I am refering to the "survival of the fittest"
applying to businesses as well as "nature", phew!)

I spent the day installing an H&R coilover kit on my 330i. Everything
went well except that I managed to ruin the rear height adjusters so they
are now not adjustable and i broke the arm of the headlight level sensor
by not paying attention and disconnecting it first. So on Monday I'll
call the vendor and see if I can purchase just the rear height adjusters,
and call the dealer to see how much the headlight level sensor is. Today
was the most fun that I've had all week. Tomorrow I am going to
re-adjust the front ride height, it's set too low and my car looks a
little funny.
