I have found no noticeable >leaks, drips, or dark spots on my driveway. Any ideas? squeeze the rubber bellows coming out of the steering rack- they'll probably be squishy/squelchy and may even squirt fluid.. E30's racks commonly develop leaks but the fluid doesn't make it onto your driveway until the rubber bellows are full there is a rebuild kit for the racks (~$100?) but it's not for the inexperienced.. various roundel advertisers sell rebuilt racks for ~$350 (?) or so. Changing your rack can be DIY but is a little fiddly. I personally snipped the power steering belt, drained most of the fluid out, and have been driving sans-power for a few years now.. I never liked the overboosted feel, and really like driving without it.. parallel parking takes a bit more effort but is not a big deal (even with 15x7 and 225/50-15 T1-S rubber). If she's serious, convince her that a proper inspection by a trusted shop is the minimum requirement for any BMW in which she is seriously interested. Then steer her to Bavarian Professionals in Berkeley. Their PP inspection charge is pretty reasonable. Otherwise, a Japanese car would be very nice. I did not have an inspection other than my own eyes, and hands. My M3, I had them put it on a lift so that I can get under the car, the Mini Cooper S looked like it just rolled off the factory floor at 5K miles with all the factory tags on every part that I could eyeball. The M3 (my now departed 95) was purchased at weatherford at an excellent price, and the Cooper S was purchased at Sunnyvale Acura. So if your sister is buying an E36 (97-99) from a reputable dealer, and you go there with her to eyeball the car and drive it, I think she will be fine. For inspections, I recommend www.bmwspecialist.com (German Motor Specialist) in Sunnyvale, CA. They are good guys, sharp eye and easy to work with. So if she's getting a cheap price on the oldest of E36's, a 92 318 might be be $2500-5000 So a $100 Dealer inspection is too much? Try 1 hour at an independent; $50-$70. still too much???? Does she realize that it will cost nearly $25 to fill it with gas!? <the largest sarcasm you've heard in years> Whatever you do, don't mention the terrible expense of a Carfax, $14.99. Sorry- that just blows my mind. On a serious note; maybe she doesn't understand the value in an inspection? Do you? Hey guys, My neighbor is looking for a 5-series or 7-series. Needs to be the kind of car that impresses clients. Must be automatic, clean, and reliable. If it breaks, I'm going to hear it - and I don't want to hear it! The issue is the budget - $9K or less doesn't sound like an E39 or E38 unless somebody is feeling generous.
