It has 280k miles. It has been wrecked 3 times, one of them a total with the radiator and fan smashed into the block (we put a new front clip on from an 84 524td)....I was just driving it on an errand today...runs like a top and the engine's never been apart. Hell, I don't think the valves have been adjusted for 100k miles. It has the original timing chain and tensioner. It is a living testament of how sturdy the BMW's built in the 80's are. We do ZERO maintenance on it...and it still just keeps going and going. You gotta love em. To explain the area further, the black plastic triangle at the front corner of the window, to where the mirror attaches. Right above it, where the door seals, some rain had seeped through. I was parked at the time, but it still unnerved me. I opened the door after it'd stopped raining, and I could find no fault in either the window or body seal. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I was mainly concerned, because the rain went straight down into the door panel, where it could get into electronics. Thanks a lot! E36 check control reports "tail light failure" Good day, This is long, and inevitably must be quite boring too, so please excuse me. I do hope someone can help me however. The car in question is a E36 320i, I haven't done a VIN check, but I believe the production date is around 02/94. Yesterday I was fiddling around my car, cleaning, checking things out, you know the story :-) I have this problem where the HVAC knobs backlight only comes on sometimes, I didn't even know it worked until it lit up one night. 99.9% of the time it doesn't work and I don't have the budget to let my mechanic loose to find what the problem is. To the point. I ended up taking my OBC (I have the simplified one with only temp/clock/check control on it) display unit out. Nothing much, unplugged, later plugged it back in. When I switched the power on (but didn't start the car) it asked me to input date and time. Nothing seemingly wrong. Also, while I was checking my fluids I noticed a little relay or connector hanging loose. It's just behind the front right headlight (in this case it's the driver-side one but this is a right-hand drive car), two wires coming into a small plastic thingie about an 4 cm by 2 cm by 1 cm in size. I noticed there was another similar looking connector, but this one was clipped in place, and the clip itself had space for two of these things. So I clipped the loose one in place. Nothing seemingly wrong here either. When I started the car later, after I started the engine AND after I switched the lights on, check control said "Tail Light Failure". I thought "hm, another fused bulb" and drove off as it wasn't even dark yet. When I arrived at my destination I checked all the tail lights with the engine on and off, and they all seem to work?! Both parking lights, both brake lights, both reverse lights, both indicators behave the way they should. (I also have rear foglight switch and when I press it the indicator light on the dash comes on, but nothing happens at the back. Always been like that.) While I was at it, I also checked the headlights - - all indicators work, high/low beam, parking lights, fog lights all work. Didn't check individual fuses, but opened the fuse box and nothing looked wrong in it too. At that point my paranoia really started to develop, did I accidentally damage something during my earlier fiddling?? After all that explaining, I might as well use the opportunity and ask a couple more questions, hope it's not too rude of me :-) * I wasn't able to get the HVAC control unit out - I removed the knobs, the black front cover, and I got to a white box. The problematic light bulb is the middle one which lights up all the writing on the panel. The individual buttons' lights work fine. The bulb itself is ok and I got it to light up for a moment, but the problem is on the inside. It seems to be too big to slide out to the front or to slide down through where the OBC panel used to be, what's the trick here? * The simple OBC panel uses only one black connector going into the back. I have read the various write ups on how to convert to the full-blown OBC but it seemed like too much of a mission with all the wiring, however I found a similar-looking white connector hiding there quietly, looks exactly like what the conversion articles describe. Does that mean that my car is pre-wired for the advanced OBC and I can just get a new head unit and plug-n-play? Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable UUC digest, and thanks in advance for any hints! E36 check control reports "tail light failure" [FIXED] Fused bulb - the outer rear light. I knew there's two bulbs in each light at the back but ze Germans have done it so well that even in total darkness just the one bulb is enough to keep it shining brightly. Further, apparently most South African BMWs are pre-wired for the fancy OBC panel. My friend said he might even have a spare one lying around <g> If you have more information on how to get the HVAC knobs out, however, please do share it. I was a bad boy and did not winterize my motorcycle this past winter. (Thought I would get more use out of it.) Anyway, late Spring came around and I changed the oil, air filter and battery. (And nothing else.) The bike ran rough the first time I took it out but got better as it warmed up. The bike still runs a little rough at first, but it goes away quicker now. However, the cat has been getting hotter than I remember it should. Last night I took the bike out at night and realized that the cat was literally red hot. As well as the exhaust. Bike seemed to be running fine, but it can't be healthy. Any idea would be helpful. Bike is a 1999 R1100R. On a possibly related note, by the end of my ride I could not get the bike into second gear. First and neutral worked fine, but 2-5 were unavailable. I haven't had the cance to look at any of the shifter hardware. You should remove the carburetor and clean all of the jets. sounds to me like the float needle is sticking and dumping raw fuel into the cylinder. I just did this on two dirt bikes yesterday. If you have never done this before or are not really mechanically inclined, just take it to your favorite bike repair guy and ask them to clean out the carbs. Kirk A. In the meantime, I have been flirting with putting in a set of Schrick cams at the same time. They can be purchased separately. Or, I have seen that Turner Motorsports and others sell a JimC cam kit, with the cams, software, intake, and a new manifold, and other misc. parts. The cams are about $1200, the kit around $2900. My car already is running with a JimC intake and software. My questions are: if I put in only the cams, what kind of performance improvements will I see, if any? Would I need new software anyway to see any performance improvements?
