Sounds like a potential scam. Here is a link to a
classifieds ad website that gives a few general
examples of potential scams.

Subject: [uuc] E30 starting problems

After a great weekend at Watkins Glen with the recently rebuilt E30 325 I let it sit
for about a week and now it won't start.

It coughs and sputters a little but doesn't seem to be getting fuel plus the tach
doesn't register even when the starter is running.

I can hear what I assume to be the fuel pump running continuously after I stop keying
the starter but before I turn to the off position.

Any ideas? Put a new fuel filter on before the track weekend.

I just got a spare key for the '86 E30 which works in all doors, trunk, and ignition
except if I turn the driver's door lock to the deadbolt position I am unable to unlock
the door with the new key. I have to use the old key.

Does that mean the lock is bad and needs rebuilt or that the key is slightly off?

TIA

Subject: [uuc] <iX> Removing CV joints

Hi all,

I'm in the middle of installing new boots on my front halfshafts but I have
encountered a snag - HTF do you get the outer CV joint off the shaft?

I have read 3-4 different write-ups of ths procedure which all summarily
dismiss this step with "separate the split ring and slide the joint off the
axle. A tap with a plastic mallett maybe be necessary."

I have the axle clamped in my bench vice and a slide hammer attached to the
CV joint and I still can't seem to apply the correct 'tap' to free the
joint.

Anybody BTDT who can read me what the T-shirt says to do?

Cheers,

A classic(?) scam where a 3rd party sends you a check and you're
supposed to be nice enough to forward the goods and the extra money.
Yeah, that sounds on the up & up. not.

You are right to be suspicious.

<weird e-mails snipped>

Sounds exactly like a Nigerian scam that was attempted on me. He has a
customer/associate, etc. that owes him more money than the purchase price
and he'll send it directly to you, just send him the difference and his
shipping company will pick up the merchandise. He sends you a bogus
cashier's check, your bank says it's clear the next day, deposits the funds
into your account, and if the scam artist is lucky you wire him the
difference and you never hear from him again. Only problem is, when the
check shows up counterfeit (2 weeks later!) the bank removes the funds from
your account. You're responsible for the missing funds NOT your bank, even
though they made the money available to you!

In my case I was suspicious from the beginning and especially when I
received a cashier's check for $5000. for a set of $700. wheels. I informed
the bank of the situation and they investigated. A day later they
discovered it was counterfeit, meanwhile the "purchaser" was emailing and
calling me (via internet) about 5 times a day asking me to wire his
"shipping agent" the difference. I told him the gig was up and that
authorities were investigating the situation, I never heard a word from him
again.

This is a well known fraud routine. I was sent two $3500 bogus bank checks
and they expected me to ship my tires to Nigeria along with $3000. Right!

Any suggestions on this? I don't want to damage the tint, and I'm sure on

I dunno about the ix but every other FWD joint came off like you said.
Remove the boot so you can see where the half shaft enters the joint. Look
around through the grease to fine two wire thingys that stick up radially.
These are typically in a machined recess in the inner part of the CV joint.
Squeeze these with needle nose pliers and the ring will contract so the axle
shaft can slip out. It is this step where a plastic mallet is helpful.

Ah yes, I remember this job quite fondly...

As I recall, one side came of with several hours of 'gentle' tapping
with a 3lb hammer and a block of wood and much cussing. The other side
wouldn't budge so I took it to a shop to have them pull it. They worked
on it for about 2 hrs and finally gave up. At that point I gave up and
just used new parts for that side. I think it only took me about a
month to get the new cv joint...
