I have a 92 325i and the pedal test works on it. Turn the ignition to
position 1 and pump the gas pedal five times in five seconds. Pump it
completely to the floor. It may take a few attempts to get the hang of it.

The test is written up in several places and the fault codes may be obtained
from several sources as well. I think I got my printout of the fault codes
at Alldata.com. They're a good source for TSB's and recalls as well.

I found a test that was kind of interesting, it tests the instrument panel.
Turn the key to position 1 and hold the trip mileage reset button down
before and after turning the key. After about five seconds the instrument
panel will go through a test mode. I've used it to see if any of the light
bulbs are burnt out but its interesting to watch anyway.

Pump the pedal 5 times in 5 seconds, begin one second after turning the
ignition on. Non US models may not have this feature as it is part of the
OBD I requirements.

Mike,

It's a well known scam. Don't fall for it. Your property disappears and
their payment is no good or they string you along until they disappear.

Carey, your car should have 2 fuel pumps, one in the tank (pre-pump) and
the main pump under the left side in front of the tank. But the tach issue
leads me to believe it is a different problem. The ECU needs a reference
from the flywheel sensor(s) mounted on the bell housing. Without the
signal, you can have fuel but the ECU has no way of knowing when to fire
the spark, so it doesn't. And IIRC, the tach signal comes from the ECU.
See if the sensors are good and the wiring still has continuity to the ECU
connector.

Or I could be completely off in left field. Which may not have been a bad
thing until the Oakland A's played themselves out of the playoffs, but I
digress.

You may already have your answer but if the other ECU ends in 153 then
I can't think of any reason why you can't swap them.

To my chagrin, I've come to find out that the onboard computers for the 3 and 8
series, while they look identical, aren't. The 8 series OBC has only a single
plug in the back whereas the 3 series has two plugs.

Subsequently, I NEED ONE!! Anyone have one? I'm told that all 8 series OBC's
are the same.

Please advise,
Chris

Let me know...Cash awaits!

Oil filter pliers work very well for me for loosening the filter in the close quarters
under the hood. I got mine at Trak back in the day, but Griot's sells the same ones
last I looked. Once I've unscrewed the filter, I just let it drop into a waiting
container on the floor.

I was asking my fabricator about a good set of E36 tow hooks for the
race car a while back. He surprised me the other day with a slick set.
  Check 'em out:

http://www.tcdesignfab.com/E36TowHook.htm

They are extremely light, fold flat when not in use so they won't spear
the bumper ahead of you, and are really well-designed. I've got a set
for my car and think they're sweet.

Some of you who do a LOT of track stuff may be interested in a set.
You can order from Tony via the link above.

Hi all,

I'm in the middle of installing new boots on my front halfshafts but I have
encountered a snag - HTF do you get the outer CV joint off the shaft?

I have read 3-4 different write-ups of ths procedure which all summarily
dismiss this step with "separate the split ring and slide the joint off the
axle. A tap with a plastic mallett maybe be necessary."

I have the axle clamped in my bench vice and a slide hammer attached to the
CV joint and I still can't seem to apply the correct 'tap' to free the
joint.

Anybody BTDT who can read me what the T-shirt says to do?

Cheers,

chris,

I just replaced the boots on my 91 IX. The little C clip is in there.
there is a recessed area in the half shaft where the ring sites. You will
need to clean out the CV joint grease to see it. Just separate it a little,
and the half shaft will disconnect.

hope this helps.
Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Hey I had the same thing happen to me about 3 weeks ago and it had the same
bad ghramer:) I received a couple of emails from a guy that said he had a
buyer for my '95 325i that was for sale.(shameless plug:) He also said it
needed to happen asap and that I was supposed to take out even more money
then I was asking for the car and then give him the rest. Got really
confusing so I decided that if it sounds too good to be true... This stinks
just like when I got an e-mail from some guy in whatsgeria saying that he
had 20 million and he needed me to hold onto it for a little while and for
the effort I could keep 15% of the 20 Large. I believe it was either the
fact that they wanted my account number or they just wanted to launder some
money! Not worth being fleeced out of my money or my car. Any takers
looking for a real nice on and live in the US of A???

I tried the way you listed. PITA that never worked. Funny thing was
when I was trying that way, the inner CV came out, and the inner was
somehow easier to remove, so I did it that way for the next 3 times.
Works like a champ. Minimal vulgarities required.
I'm actually getting pretty good at it. I think the last time only took
3 hrs, start to finish.

I use an air impact hammer to drive the axle out of the CV. I've never
had
success doing it any other way. After, of course, you've removed the
