For the record, the 5 WOT procedure does not work on all E36s.
I've had not problem with it in my prior E30s, but it absolutely does not
work on my 8/94 prod M3.
For people who can't get their CE codes by mashing the gas pedal, you need
to check with your local BMW CCA chapter for the shops that will pull your
codes for free with a reader. Some chapters, like ours, carry code readers
in the chapter's toolbox.

Dave,
Is you right side the passenger or driver's side?
As you can guess, the right-left orientation changes depending which way
you are looking at the car.

One of the above.
If your engine bay is dirty, clean it and watch for blueish traces of OE
BMW coolant.
If you are brave, unbolt the upper radiator hose and give the plastic neck
a good wiggle. If it comes off you are still better off than discovering
this out in the middle of the road.
Last, but not least, look under the thermostat housing. If it's still
plastic, it could have deformed with age/heat and started leaking. If you
haven't replace the t-stat lately, it's gasket have likely shriveled up
and are bleeding off the coolant.
Or it could be something else ;-).

Bimmerphiles,

Help! My DME has been subject to intrusion of moisture and minor
corrosion. Car is acting up... big time. Currently proceeding with
cleaning and re-test of my DME in my car. Want another as back-up,
replacement, and/or for testing. New are (ouch!) pricey.

(Sorry for the cross-post.)
TIA.

Jay Herrick

P.S. any help identifying my specific P/N (dummy didn't get it) would be
appreciated. (vehicle ID -EF42277)
P.P.S. Anyone know what my chip has in it?

Clearly a case of a driver with insufficient skill driving a car with very
high performance capabilities, not exercising discretion in a situation
that called for it. All the more reason to get these kids into the BMW CCA
driving program at an early age, so that they learn that there is a safe
place to drive in this manner and it is not on twisty public roads that
need to have the gravel swept off.

My understanding is that right-left orientation is always when one is seated in the
car, thus removing the obvious confusion that can result between LHD and RHD vehicles.

Scott,

I agree with you 100%. What I was referring to as sad
was the part about how the 19-year-old gentleman died
in the car.

This strikes home for me since a friend of mine had a
17-year-old brother that died of the exact same cause.
He was on a windy back road to his house late at
night, lost control of his truck, and was not found
until the a passerby came upon the smoldering, flipped
heap several hours later.

I agree that they were going too fast, that street
racing is stupid, yada x3, but the fact that someone
died in this situation is especially sad.

By the way, I put my E28 into a telephone pole after
swerving for a dog, putting two tires into wet grass,
and skidding for 40+ yards. I was going below the
limit.

I also should've known better. . . than to drive a car
with TRXes in rain and to swerve for a dog when a new
Euro valence -- the only damage I would've incurred if
I had hit the dog -- is only $300.

Coolant also leaves a white film when it dries around the engine compartment.

Suspect areas are

- - Thermostat housing
- - Radiator filler neck
- - Water pump

Also, just scan generally for coolant stains. I actually had a return line that
slipped loose and
got nicked by the fan. If you've got a puddle, you probably have something noticable.

Realize that it can be something transient that only happens when the car is warming
up, Parts
swell and change shape in the warmup process, leaving everything nice and dry when
running. It may
only be during the evening cooldown that the leav manifests itself.

I'm guessing the dog would have a different opinion on this.

I read about this on the other forums that those guys were members of.

1. Red Mist can kill anyone, regardless of Talent? or better yet, red mist
will cause you to drive past your talent. The car in question, was trying
to catch another E46 M3 that most likely "WAS NOT" racing him. So this is
not a case of street racing, per say. Just 1 car trying to keep up with
the other car, which they dont even know if the lead car was aware of the
car behind it pushing so hard to catch him.

Case of my 6/10ths is your 11/10ths.

A truly horrible accident, with the passenger who died, being burned death
while aware of what was happening to him. Both driver and front passenger
exited the car, leaving the rear passenger in the car to meet his maker.
Truly horrible. The driver suffered burns and was on fire upon exiting the
car. The passenger had minor wounds. Eye witnesses tried running up to
help the SCREAMING passenger in the back, but were stopped 20ft away by the
flames and the sudden stop of his screams.

This is just truly horrible, a waste of a life and what a horrible way to
go. Just because some guy felt he needed to catch or pass another car.

Don't write it off to street racing, it was a case of over driving
conditions, talent, cars ability, with too many passengers. Just keep this
accident in the back of your mind the next time that other car is ahead of
you, or your driving at 10/10ths on a public road etc. I know in my life, I
have done many many many stupid things in a car due to pure young stupidity.
How I survived or kill someone, I will never know. Taking to the track and
racing really helped me get it out of my system and become aware of how
quickly things can get out of hand. Even having the madskillz of
Schumacher cant make up for unforeseen dangers on a public road. . Too
many fast cars out there and I doubt the collective ability of the typical
driver has increased the same rate as the performance of the modern sports
car.

Just think about it and try to get others to think about it when you can.

Mike
