My favorite is the top and side views on how best to place 4 sets of
clubs. Is it that hard to figure out??

Chris,

Someone has a car just like yours on EBay at $3900 right now?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2437459510
There are 11 more of them for a less paltry sum. Why are all of these
850's suddenly selling for less?

Sorry guys, I am an almost pure lurker, but this got to me: Mini-rant on!

I am not especially fond of Jerry S. either, but sheeesh. The green eyed
monster rears it's ugly head...jealousy can be so ugly. If I had the
millions to throw around, I would probably do what I wanted, too...as long
as it was legal and did not infringe on the liberties of others. He seems
to have tried to accommodate the surrounding community, what's the big deal?
Would he be more accepted to this whiney-butt if they were Packards, Fiats,
Yugos? Sounds like a case of toy envy, pure and simple. I know I hate (he
says with a drawl and rolling eyes) a nearby (friend that lives 5 hours
away) M1 owner for his toy...

So he wants a grandiose garage, BFD. I am hoping to do the same in five to
seven years, just on the scale of three cars, no kitchen, one level, but
still my vision of the perfect garage. Maybe I can get ridiculed, too? Can
I please?

Fighting the power,
Andrew Joseph

Chris asks:
Is it normal for E30/E28 final drives with high miles to make this kind
of noise? Comments/advise will be appreciated.

Alex answers:
In short, yes.
E30 limited slip diffs are almost universally noisy from somewhere
around 100K miles on. You can somewhat quiet them with heavier oils with LSD
additives, but not for long.

Now I wonder...My 87 325is LSD makes this same noise. I run 75W90 in it. I was told
it needed a new pinion bearing. (I need to do some more research about the LSD, I am
just reporting this as it was said to me) The car has 165k on it. Are the additives
really effective? Am I going to be walking home soon? Will my limited slip lose the
limited part?
Trying to learn.

I just got my "new" final drive apart far enough tonight to be able
to remove the diff and set it aside. In my case, the ring gear is
held in place by hex head bolts (not socket head) and none of them
were loose. So in my experience, 100% of the bolts from all the diffs
I have seen have been still tight.

Now then, as for the seals in the final drive case, where to get that
thin wall 30mm socket that will un/re do the nut holding the input
shaft assembly in place?

WOW! 4 sets of clubs? My E39 came with a similar diagram, but it was how to
fit 3 sets of clubs in the trunk. That makes the BangleButt all worthwhile.

The socket head bolts that come loose are securing the end cap of the LSD
unit, not the ring gear.

Subject: [uuc] Z4 tranny questions

I drove a Z4 with SMG at O'fest and was impressed. I would appreciate
insights about the SMG and the tip tronic or whatever BMW calls the
automatic transmission.
1. Who manufactures these two transmissions? ZF or GM? Are the same
transmissions used in the 2.5 and 3.0 liter cars?
2. What problems should one expect with the clutchless manual (SMG)? It
seems like a complex shifting mechanism that might be prone to problems.
3. Does the auto manual upshift on deceleration when in sport mode? That
might be kinda disconcerting during cornering!!!

Thanks in advance.

Subject: [uuc] MTF-LT-1 question

What is the preferred tranny fluid for a 99 M3 w/5 speed? After reading
thru the archives, I was under the impression that RedLine D4ATF or
Mobil1 ATF was the way to go and that BMW called out for ATF in the
manual trannies. However, the tranny has a yellow sticker stating
MTF-LT-1 fluid only. What gives? Should I go with MTL or the Redline
D4-ATF or Mobil 1 ATF?

TIA!
