Now for the ugly stuff.... I had received some spot-on help from you all with the driveline rumbling in my eta. Since then, I have replaced the guibo, the center support bearing and the transmission mounts. I was careful to mark the driveshaft so as to connect them the same way they came apart and the car is still exhibiting the same rumbling between 2-3k RPM's in second gear and a more constant wobbling at 75-80 mph. In my verve to do all I could while it was apart, I was, however, thwarted by the collar nut on the tranny output flange. This failure the remove the nut (I almost rounded it off like a jerk and got nervous and backed off it) had two consequences: I was not able to change the tranny and shift linkage seals. I was NOT able to remove the harmonic balancer. Could the harmonic balancer be causing the wobbling? As much as it pains me to undo everything, I must fix this wobbling. Is it possible to bend a driveshaft by not fixing the wobble immediately. It wasn't wobbling for that long, but though replacing these would have remedied. Anything I missed replacing? Thanks! I got my from http://www.bimmerparts.com/ You should check out http://www.eap4parts.com/ too. They seem to have some good prices on certain parts. In the rear, replace the rear shock mounts. Use the E46M3 mounts (about $12ea.). In the front, consider the control arms & sway bar end links. If you want some better handling, replace the strut tower bearings with the offset ones and use the E30M3 offset control arm bushings. > > Now for the ugly stuff.... > > I had received some spot-on help from you all with the > driveline rumbling in my eta. Hmmm, these items fixed a similar noise in my M3. Also check the diff to rear subframe, diff mount, and subframe mounts. I'm assuming the center support was properly pre-loaded? > > In my verve to do all I could while it was apart, I was, > however, thwarted by the collar nut on the tranny output > flange. This is actually an interesting point. If the gov't was really concerned that speeding cost lives & that the maximum speed should be 70mph, then shouldn't all cars have a 70mph governor? With broadcast signals, you could probably even broadcast an open signal to a receiver in any car telling the computer to limit the top speed to any value. But then, you might as well take the bus......and imagine the extraordinary loss of revenue nationwide.... > > So let's blame the dumb kids, not the cars for such acts of > stupidity. That > kid was old enough to drive, so he should have had enough > common sense to > "drive responsibly". And the parents don't get off scott-free > either....stupid parents raise stupid kids. Welcome to a blameless society. Obviously this couldn't have happened because ***I*** was stupid, it must be because the car was too fast, the road banked the wrong way, I had to pee out that huge shake & that guy in front of me I was trying to keep up with was a much faster or better driver. There are going to be many more stupid people out there than otherwise, but if they can afford a car like that, who are we to stop them. If the kid in question could afford that car & all it's related expenses, then more power to him. If he earned it, then he deserves the car. You can't really control what he does with it, although I'd think it's safe to say he's not going to be driving anything (or at least anything that nice) for a long while. If the parents bought the car, then perhaps they should've known better, but how many normal people really know what those things are capable of. I think that most non-car enthusiasts don't really realize how quickly those things pile on mph & that avoiding an accident isn't nearly as easy as everyone thinks. One of my buddy's dad just got a 3.0 Z4. He opened up the gas in that thing & scared the hell out of himself. He told me he had no idea a car would do that & thank goodness for the traction control. Now pile on 100 more hp! In the end, the driver let testosterone get the better of him, unfortunately with very tragic results. I'm 29 & it still gets the better of me sometimes, well maybe more than sometimes.....Ok, ok, alot. I don't think anyone here can profess to never have been a hot-head; especially had they had the chance to drive a sports car like that at 20. And the fact of the matter is that driver training the US generally sucks. > > John Weese > BMW CCA #76646 Lee ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #6812 *************************** | | In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. |________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | | Autoscope-Motorsports - http://www.autoscope-motorsports.com | |==================================================== | | Koala MotorSport .
