An interesting point you made about how people don't realize how fast an M
car can really be. Case in point...I was 24 years old. My dad had purchased
a new E36 M3 in 95. I was home from college and had a friend visit. My dad
thought it would be nice to let me take the M3 out that night. A mistake. I
had never driven anything with that performance yet...and I was not up to
controlling the car after I was showing off the 0-60 rush. The car hit 90mph
before I knew it and a turn was coming up...ran into the front yard of a
house, through a iron gate, and ran it up onto a concrete step. The shocks
went through the hood. Nasty accident...and I learned the hard way.
Thankfully nobody was hurt. I don't forget that whenever I get in to a fast
car.

I am wondering if there is any truth to what I've been hearing about 2002 7
series. Lost of issues? The local dealer claims they have had scores of
problems with these cars...mostly with computer related stuff. These issues
were supposedly corrected by the 2003 models. I have a client who wants one,
and wondered if I should only stick to the 03's.

Come on, Jeff! :-)

There are plenty of BMW owners out there who enjoy playing golf. And many
do not have the luxury of owning multiple vehicles. Since golf is typically
played by a foursome, and since some golfers enjoy trying new courses, it's
quite common to have four pals meet up at someone's house to car-pool out to
the course. Hence the need to stow four bags. And it's probably not that
rare either to have four members in the household who'd like to go to the
club together. So isn't it better that BMW offers a really nice U.D.M. that
also serves this function, so that buyers can choose to buy a BMW instead of
having to get, say, a Range Rover? :-)

FWIW, I play golf about once a year, if I get around to it... and did, in
fact, need, on one occasion, to squeeze four sets of clubs and four guys
into my E38 740iL.

Though, I might add, I not infrequently find myself loading up the 740 with
FOUR SETS of skis, poles, bags and three passengers with me when we head up
North. And since it's a BMW, I can still cruise through the White Mountains
at speed. :-) (when the roads are clear, of course).

vty,

Isn't that what Ranger Rovers HSE's are for?

Since when did four set's of golf clubs become a requirement for the
Ultimate Driving Machine? Or - have I misunderstood that BMW means by
"Driving"? ;)

Well, I have 'heard' they have bought back more of these than any other
model in the history of the company. Pure hearsay, but on the 7 boards,
several have had free replacements etc.

I would not sell one to anyone that knew me, where i lived or how to get
intouch with me after the sale.

Needless to say my dad was unhappy and did not document the accident for
further viewing:-) It happened back in 1996. The car was less than a year
old and had 5k miles. It was a bad evening...believe you me.

Either the Red Line or the Mobil 1. Your car requires a D4-type ATF.

It is my understanding that many of the problems with the early 745i and
745Li models were software related issues. I also have been told that there
is a software update which will resolve many of the problems.

IIRC the trans doesn't shift in sport mode. It will run up or down in the
same gear. In sport auto I think it will shift only if you bump the rev.
limiter. I had one out at the cancer ride. It Is awsum.

LOL. In fact, I think that someone DID set that as a
design parameter, prolly some focus group or other
said that "Nooooh, I'd NEVER buy a <insert whatever
car> unless I can get all 4 sets of clubs in there".
Too bad we can't have the DELETE option on the Golf
Club Trunk.

oh, ok. Well there were some of those. And they were tight too. :)

Bentley just tells me that the differential itself is not within the
scope of their publication. (yet it shows pictures of a disassembled
manual tranny, which to me looks way more complicated!).
What resources should I use to learn more about the thing? Can an
average slob like me rebuild one (or even verify proper operation)
without a lot of expensive tools? I understand there is some pressing
and torquing and preloading going on for LSDs. Beyond that, I'm
clueless. Just send it to someone smart? Who?

Yes, but the 75W90 RedLine already has it.

I bet not.
My diff rumbled all the way to 230K miles when I sold the car. I bet it is
still going and will cross the 300K mark ... and then some.

> Will my limited slip lose the limited part?

Not in my empirical experience.
I do not know for sure what causes the noise, other than they all do it,
they all do it for really long time and that it doesn't seam to degrade
the performance.
