Cars, it turns out, are a very, very harsh environment for electronics.

So are warplanes, of course, but the parts are built to very high (and
very expensive) specs.

And compare the maintenance regimen of an A6E to that of your
Escalanche. And you're probably much better than the average owner.

Sure you can - you just need a laptop.

I hate to mention this, since Chris has probably been laughing at how this
thread has been progressing... But not only is that car "just like" his car,
it IS his car...

Reading between the lines... Could the reserve price on this auction be,
perhaps, $23,500?  ;-}

(And yes, I think it's worth at least what he's asking for it. I'd buy it
for that price if I had room for it!)

negotiate the price down, I don't think it's gonna work... ;-})

Dennis is, of course, right about using auctions in progress for value: The
only eBay prices that are 'true' are those listed for closed auctions,
preferably closed auctions where the 'winning bidder' actually came across
with the cash (something that, more and more, seems not to happen all the
time...). All the *real* bidding action happens in the last few minutes, or
seconds, of most of these auctions anyway.

Now, if there were lots of 850s that were being sold 'below reserve', or
fetched very low prices on 'no-reserve' auctions, I'd be a bit more
suspicious. Doubt that's happening on the good examples...

The previous generation M-B S and SLs have had over 50 computers on board.
There are lots of little embedded micros all over the car controlling
things like gauges, the telematics (which have their own share of multiple
CPUs and processors), the traction control, brakes, etc. And here I
thought stegosauruses were fancy with their two brains.

As for over-engineering, a well-known German maker of ABS systems reboots
their ABS computer several times a second for maximum reliability.

Neil goes from talking about the 745i and computers to
talking about a pair of lemon buses or something. Wait
a minute you meant ceteris paribus.

Never mind.

I think this works for most things for most people.
In my experience, exposure to the 'good' things
develops taste, while the opposite may cause a
stunting of the ability to be discerning. In school I
found that, generally speaking, those from wealthier
backgrounds and with greater exposure (read "would
have been spoilt if they'd been silly") worked harder
than those who were not.

I think the exceptions, like the thieving (but very
attractive!) Ms Ryder or the Max Factor hier (can't
recall what he did, but it seemed below par!) just get
pointed out more.

I think with the topic, exposure and experience to
high speed cars develops a much greater respect for
the abilities of the car.

Part of the pre-flight check was to check for fluid leaks. If there weren't
any you wouldn't go flying. It was an indication that there was no oil ;-)

Subject: [uuc] E30 Diff noise

Hi

I own two of these cars and I don't think the diffs make noise. The only
times they did was

1:) When I first got the 1988 it was noisy. I changed the diff oil (not even
redline) this fixed it.

2:) I put a used 4:10 in the 1988 and the pinion gear was worn. That made
noise. Replaced it with another used 4:10 and it was fine.

My 1987 still has the original 3:73 in it and it is quiet even with 175K on
the clock.

Also can we give the "another sad BMW related story" thread a break??

Thanks

By Jove! I think you are right.

I shouldn't have said anything, but one of my pet peeves is someone
listing something for sale and then someone jumps in and says:

1) That is too much
2) Here (link provided) you can get one cheaper
3) Those of cr*p, why would someone want one?
4) Some other derogatory remark about what you are selling

Since I need to sell my 330i, I guess I am overly sensitive right now
(hey, maybe I DO need a pad?) :-)

Dennis
M5 silver/black
330i silver/black/manual/sp/pp/xenon/cd - now for sale!

I have a pair of E39 M5 mufflers that I would like to get rid of. They have
<1000 miles on them and were cut off a friend's vehicle for what I believe
was Dinan mufflers. They are in good shape with some scratches from being
stored. I'll take money or just shipping for them. They are in NJ and they
are heavy. I would prefer someone just come by and pick them up. Drop me an
email off the list if you are interested.

I also have a glass sunroof for E30 on Ebay:

I know it is not 'Rare,' but thought that might help with searches.

Thanks for the bandwidth.

Subject: [uuc] E30: new belts and now a new vibration(?)

I just had new belts (except for the timing) put on my '88 325is (106k), and
immediately noticed a vibration in the engine. I can feel it in the steering wheel
and the floor. It comes at around 2700 rpm and again, worse, at 4000rpm, and
especially under load, or when I lift my foot from the gas. When I clutch-in, it goes
away, but I suspect that is related more to the reduced revs, and load, and not the
dis-engagement of the drivetrain.

The previous owner had the same thing happen with new belts and couldn't find the
problem, so he lived with it until the next change. Then the vibration went away.

My mechanic used NAPA belts. Are the OEM any different?

Has this happened to any of you E30 drivers out there? Does anyone have any
suggestions?

Many thanks in advance

***************************************************************************
Just as seriously but closer to topic I have a couple of stories about
Australia's Richest man, Kerry Packer. He is a long-time car nut and still
uses his E38 750il most times when he chooses to drive himself here in
Sydney. I believe he has identical cars in London and New York.

To set the tone, story one (absolutely true and extremely Australian); Mr
Packer is in the high roller room of his favourite casino in Las Vegas.
He's
already lost more than ten million US dollars this night but it's no big
deal. A visiting Texan walks in and isn't impressed that this upstart
Packer
has taken his favourite chair at the Blackjack table. The Texan oil
millionaire asks Packer who the hell he is. Packer replies and asks the man
"How much are you worth mate?".

The Texan replies "I'm worth one hundred million dollars".

Without the slightest pause Packer ends the conversation with "Tell you
what
mate, I'll toss you for it".

The Texan leaves quietly through a side door.

Story two; Kerry Packer has owned a lot of cars and he has long had a soft
spot for the magnificent seven. Just about the first new E65 in Australia
was delivered to Mr Packer. The 'unconfirmed rumour' goes something like
this: BMW rep delivers fully optioned E65 to new owner and spends an hour
familiarising said owner with new car. BMW rep returns to dealership. A
little over one hour later owner returns to dealership having put fist
through malfunctioning display screen. Owner demands return of his previous
seven series and leaves E65 at the dealers. Owner is happy. Dealer has
premonitions of doom.

It's certainly not true that all the way back to the dealership the onboard
computer was admonishing the driver for his 'un-German' loss of self
control.
