True,

Unfortunately the google groups interface is not nearly as good as more
common forum like software, but then it is free and pretty much maintained
for the group by Google.

With open source forum software like SMF or phpBB you have much better
control but then someone has to manage it which can be a major chore dealing
with spammers etc.. I can certainly understand why someone would not like
to manage a public list now days. I lean more towards SMF over phpBB but
that is just a matter of personal taste.

Most of the forums that I manage now days are for membership groups which
only let members join to publish and post but have the forum open for anyone
to see. Lot less work for the moderator in the long run as they know who
the users are..

The days where you only restricted new users with valid email addresses and
captcha's are almost gone since both can now be defeated by many spam bots.

Gmail however is pretty cool. Been using it for many years and use it
subscribed to a number of technical mailing lists like Exim-users which I
almost never read when they come out, but get stored in my Gmail account
that I can then find and review when I need to look something up. If I have
a question, I simply reply to the mailing list and I am already setup ready
to do so. The labels cool and easy to use as filters.
