I'm kind of new here, but I do have my permanent collection (mostly)
registered. What I do to avoid marring the book is I use super-sticky
sticky notes and put the number on the sticky note. (If the sticky note
falls off and I need to find the number I can use search and put the
title in and my user ID.) That allows me to have book registered which
gives me a number of advantages. First, I know how many books I have.
Secondly, if I ever decide to release or trade something from my
permanent collection I am covered already.

So I would suggest if someone wants keep open to trading the books on
other book-trading sites, registered it, and note the number on a
sticky. If the trade comes from another site, simply go into
BookCrossing and delete the book. In the meantime, you can use the
resources of the site to search for the books you want in trade, without
giving up the chance to find the books on another site!
