I put my own perspective on Rosie's words and did

delete.

I took the suggestion to mean, if the book is
already permanently labeled, to be marked as,
well, I hadn't thought it through yet, but
something other than available or pc or tbr.
Maybe reserved.

Otoh, if we're using sticky notes, and then
taking them out because a swapper wants a clean
copy, then there is not BCID, and the book will
no longer be journaled, because the recipient
will not be able to find it in bookcrossing (or
even have the note to alert them to the existence
of bookcrossing).

So then it seems to me that, if there is a
provision for deletion in bookcrossing.com, that
the book should be deleted, because it simply is
not a bookcrossing book because it does not have
a bookcrossing label.

Maybe Rosie has further clarification.

Hi everyone,
I was replying to Cheryl's thread about trading her hardback science
fiction classics for paperbacks... A couple of people told her really
great ideas about how to use BookCrossing to register the books and be
more likely to find what she wants in trades but Cheryl DID want to do
trades with "clean copies"... i.e. no bookcrossing number on it for
other bookswaps... I don't know much about the other book trading
arenas, so I could only assume that she really needed clean copies.

So that was my idea about how to do both things at both times. I did
mean delete, because I was assuming she was trading with someone who was
insisting on a clean copy and it would not be able to be journalled. I
have deleted one book one time for personal reasons, and nothing bad
happened in the system that I was aware of. I was assuming that delete
was there for good reason - you might decide for many reasons to not
have a book in BookCrossing. Although I use BookCrossing for keeping
track of my permanent collection as well as my availables, etc., I don't
have ALL my books in because I do have a few "grown up" books and I
decided that it was not a good idea to have them up on BookCrossing.
The bulk of my collection IS on BookCrossing and thus people could see
what I like and decide to lure me with a good trade (grins).

And another part of that is that I do have in my collection a few older
first version collectable books and a few signed books. I did register
them in my collection. They do show my tastes and it is also nice to
have all my collection catalogued on B/Cing. I did not want to besmirch
them with any marks, so I put the stickies on them too. I hope I never
fall on hard times and need to sell them, but should I ever decide to do
so, I will use delete and take them out of the system. I guess there is
always the chance that someday I might change my mind about them and
send them out on a trade... so for now they are there, in case I do ever
want to trade them, so I have a printable list of everything I own, and
so that I can show my fellow BCers what I like.

>From what I understand of B/C technically, delete should not cause a
problem in these cases. It looks like it is just a normal database and
there are programs in place to clean up the system whenever we delete
books. Delete can be used if you mistakenly enter a roommates book, if
you change your mind, etc. So I think it is safe.

I wouldn't put something that I had sold or traded or lost that didn't
have the BCID on it on reserved or traveling because as someone else
said, it would never be journalled and it is no longer a BC book. It is
probably cleaner to delete those from the system.

I thought for Cheryl it would be a good idea to do, and it might still
be, because it opens up some options for her with trades. If she gets
the trade from someone who doesn't care if it is labeled or not she can
send it out like that, and if she gets the trade from someone who
insists on a pristine copy she can still do the trade, just delete the
book. She may not have to delete any of the books at all. It's just an
option "just in case".

Options are wealth....

B/Cing is cool because it gives us these options!

Rosie
