Well I'm not sure I'd do that to a -new- one - maybe a slightly tatty second hand one. But I'm really not convinced the baffle is to blame. I just took a look at the one in my kitchen. The rubber surrounds do move a fair bit with the volume up, but since they're glued down at their outer edges the movement at the edge is virtually nil. The ~1mm gap between the rubber surround and the baffle never really changes.
