I recently ordered two Boom displays from Joe (Johannes) who shipped
them to me here in VA from Germany. I have a local vintage hifi repair
shop that can do the repair/replacement. But this morning, the repair
guy called me to say that in my Booms, the connections to the display
LED are covered in a big hardened blob of glue that apparently American
manufacturers have been "adding" to their electronic components since
the 70s. This blob of glue can't be dissolved with a solvent so he is
attempting to carefully chip it off in order to get the old display out.
I have not read of anyone else running in to this problem with the Boom
display replacement. Is this just a thing that afflicts the Booms sold
for the USA market? Anyway, my repair guy fears that the chipping
process could damage one of the other tiny little parts on the circuit
board. I hope not. Any advice before I allow him to start chipping on my
second Boom?
