Forgive me for chiming in late here. I don't usually read the Boom
forum, but just happened to stumble across this thread. Technically, NPR
is a sort of co-op. It is "owned" by its member stations. (People often
assume the opposite, that NPR owns and operates the local stations.)
Even though public broadcasting, by definition, is supposed not to be
driven by market forces, that distinction ended long ago. Local stations
depend on listenership numbers to justify their funding. Therefore,
local stations are unwilling to let NPR bypass them and stream directly
to listeners.
