I dont know. I know you can do simple lists but I'm not sure you can do anything
sophisticated. (Correct me if i'm wrong though ) What I am talking about is
reference documentation such as the C+ standard. Take for example 17.3.2.1.2.
in the Standard. You could do something like this by nesting lists but it would
get quite complex and would look like :

17
     3
        2
            1
                2

rather than

17.3.2.1.2

The scheme I thought of would look like the following:
Let me know if the following makes no sense!
(note that separators can be ,.- space etc)
(I have omitted any headings after for simpliciy)

quickbook                        html

[=.=.=-=]                           1.1.1-1
[=.=.=-+]                           1.1.1-2
[=.=.=-+]                           1.1.1-3
[=.=.+.=]                           1.1.2-1

To start at para 17.3.2.1.2 do

[=17.=3.=2.=1.=2]        17.3.2.1.2
[+.]                                 18.
[=.=.=]                            18.1.1
[=.=.+]                            18.1.2
[=.+.=]                            18.2.1

= means stay the same, + in a column means incr that column and set all columns
to the right of it to 1.

Other features would be to generate a List of Contents index based on the text
after these numbering tags. To link to the tags(maybe by adding an anchor after
the tag) so that the link ( a paragraph number e.g " see [17.3.2.1.2] ") is
changed in sync if a paragraph is added or removed.
