I would like an escaped space to be treated punctuation for the purposes of
parsing, and removed from the output.
i.e.,
/foo/\ *bar*
would be translated into
<emphasis>foo</emphasis><emphasis role="bold">bar</emphasis>
Without this feature it's hard to create adjacent inline markup.
Currently you can work around this problem by defining a macro:
[def _\_]
/foo/_\_*bar*
But note that this only works because '_' is treated as punctuation.
[def x]
/foo/x*bar*
doesn't work the same way.
