I'm not sure I understand. A non-space character must follow the
leading markup. The / there is followed by a space, so it's not
emphasized. Let me give a quick rundown of some of the rules:

* A non-space character must follow the leading markup

     bad:  / foo/

* A non-space character must precede the trailing markup

     bad:  /foo /

* A space or a punctuation must follow the trailing markup

     bad:  /foo/x
     good: /foo/*
     good: /foo/ bar

Is there really a need to add the rule:

* A space or punctuation must precede the opening delimiter.

??

Ahh, to make this non-marked-up:

     a/b

?? Yeah, sure. Ok.
