Actually I think that would only be needed to make this non-marked-up:

but I don't think it's so terrible to have the above mean
a<italic>b</italic>
and it is actually easier for 3rd-party tools like emacs if they don't
have to do lookbehind for Simple Formatting markup. So I think I am
withdrawing my comment completely.
Okay, I guess there's one place we might regret not having that rule:
The result of 3*5 is 15* wherever you do it.
* unless you're using modulo-n arithmetic where n < 15
But I don't think that's significant; it is only a problem if you're
expecting simple plaintext to "just work."
