This is very weird, it all displays fine for me, both in PDF and HTML 
formats.  Does the PDF here: http://www.johnmaddock.co.uk/test/test.pdf, 
display OK?  If not it's very likely a font problem on your system :-(

The only thing I noticed about the XHTML is that it's generated as UTF-8 
rather than as ASCII with escapes for special characters.  I don't know if 
that makes a difference though?
