It could be related to character encoding detection. Can you check, in Firefox, under View -> Character Encoding, if you've got Auto-detect turned on and what type of automatic detection you have? I usually have it set for UTF-8 or Universal auto-detection, but ocasionally I still have to rectify Firefox's choices. With all the funny symbols in the html 4 symbols page, Firefox probably has an easier time figuring out the encoding and tries to use that by default for the following pages (on the same site?).
