Just to lengthen this thread: I have Mindspring/Earthlink ADSL at home, with a dynamic IP. I have 1500 down, 400 up and I find the IP changes about every 3 weeks or so. I serve a few personal sites off a linux box (RH 7.2) and I find that the ADSL connection hardly ever drops- maybe 3-4 times over 2+ years.
I've been very happy with Earthlink/Mindspring and would recommend them heartily. No port blocking here! I use www.dynu.com for dynamic DNS services and have a cron'd perl script that checks for IP changes and does the update every minute if necessary. Dynu is fast, and I rarely have DNS problems. If anyone is interested in getting an account to play around with, I'd be a good little sysadmin. Perl 5.6.0 (with like a bajillion modules installed), mySQL, PHP (bleah), whatever else you want to help me install. I'd imagine most folks have root access to whatever machines they want, but it's available for the asking. -Dan Collis Puro Drew Taylor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Glad it worked out for you. As an aside, at my last job in Waltham they had business >class DSL from Verizon, and even for that service level they had port 80 blocked! It was worth it though because the DL speed was around 5Mb. :-)
