This may be simple enough to do by editing your XFree86 config manually.
Try this (your results will vary a little):
$ grep -i modes /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
You'll probably have lines beginning with "1600x1200". If you move them
behind a "1280x1024" entry in the list in your XF86Config file, that may
be enough to fix it.
Also, if you have more than one mode defined, you should be able to toggle
between them with something like [ctrl]+[alt]+[+]. That's close to the
keychord, but it isn't working on this machine, and I don't want to crash
X accidentally with a [ctrl]+[alt]+[bksp] :-)
But if you just want one reasonable defauly geometry, you should be able
to get it by editing your XF86Config file [note that the name could vary
by distribution; I'm using Debian, but the name & directory should be
similar for other distributions such as RHE] so that you have just the one
geometry you want -- or, as here, put the one you want first, and pretend
the other ones don't exist.
Let me know if this doesn't help...
